Roger Joseph Kathman Jr.

Roger was born in Covington, Kentucky, to the late Roger J. Kathman Sr. and Ethel Herbert.

He graduated from Covington Catholic High School in 1959, attended University of Kentucky and proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1961 to 1967. In 1967, he married B. Ann McCarthy, who predeceased him, and together they built a life filled with love and family. Since 2016, Roger found love and happiness in his partnership with Phyllis Frederic.

Roger was a devoted father to his three children: Jill Kathman (Troy Brown), Jeanne Herrington, and Jeff Kathman. He also cherished his grandchildren: Alicia Herrington and Sean Kathman. He is also survived by his son, James, and his family.

He started his professional career with his family at Cincinnati Paper. He also worked for Parker Pen and later became the National Sales Manager for Mead Corporation. After leaving the winter chill of Schaumburg Illinois for Sarasota in 1979, he opened Sunshine True Value Hardware. Roger also enjoyed a long career in Sarasota real estate. He owned Century 21 Siesta Sands and Century 21 Advantage for many years where he was proud of mentoring so many people starting their own real estate careers.

Roger and his family were long time members of Church of the Incarnation and founding members of St Patrick’s where he could be found serving as Head Usher on Sunday mornings.

Roger and Phyllis were members of the Meadows Country Club where they could regularly be found on the tennis courts and golf course.

He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Peggy King, and is survived by his siblings: Robert Kathman, Barbara Riley, Linda Emmett, and Nancy Cahill. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Roger will be remembered for his kind heart, strong character, and the lasting impact he had on all who knew him.

A remembrance gathering will be held on Saturday, December 7th at 11AM until 2PM at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of choice.
