December 19, 1931 – June 17, 2026
SARASOTA, FL — The world is a little less vibrant today as we announce the passing of Sallye Joyce Wilson (Bright) Johnson, who left us on June 17, 2026, at the age of 94. To know Sallye was to know a whirlwind of energy, sharp wit, and unyielding love. She was a spunky, funny, fiercely independent, and unapologetically no-nonsense woman who was, without fail, the life of the party.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 19, 1931, to James Elliott Wilson, Sr. and Ruby Belle (nee Hanks) Wilson Brown, Sallye grew up with a commanding presence and an infectious personality. She carried that trademark Chicago drive and The Bronx grit throughout her life. Sallye attended Wilson College (now Kennedy-King College), paving the way for a remarkable, professional career.
For 25 years, Sallye led the EKG/Cardiology Department at Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center of Chicago as its Supervisor, and also worked at Jacobi Hospital, Albert Einstein Hospital, and Montefiore Medical Hospital in NYC. She was highly skilled in leadership, medical data evaluations, and electrocardiogram technology. In the workplace, she was known for being professional and strict, and expected excellence from everyone around her because she gave nothing less than herself. Yet, her fierce exterior protected a deeply compassionate heart. For fifteen and a half years, Sallye also served her community as a dedicated Rape Victim Counselor, providing vital strength and advocacy to survivors in their darkest hours.
Sallye’s personal life was just as full, dynamic, and colorful as her career. She was joined in life with two marriages, first to Dr. Ronnell Lovelace Bright, and later to Adrian "Chubby" Johnson. She approached her hobbies with the same vigor she brought to everything else. An avid reader who was never without a book, Sallye also loved rollerskating, swimming, and hitting the birdies as a proud member of the Ebony Ladies Golf League of Chicago. A woman of deep Christian faith, she shared her time generously at Woodlawn AME Church in Chicago and later at Bethel AME Church in Saginaw, Michigan.
More than anything, Sallye was the formidable and loving matriarch of a sprawling family. She was a strict but fiercely devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She commanded the room at family gatherings, keeping everyone in line with a sharp look, a quick-witted joke, and an unforgettable laugh.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: James Jr, Ralph, and Lois Simms.
Her indomitable spirit lives on in her three children: Lois Bright Wilkins (David), Faye Juliot (Keith), and Ronnell Ralph Bright (Stephanie). She is also survived by her cherished cousin, Gwen Hardin; 11 grandchildren: Ebony Joy, David Jr. (Jennifer), Samuel (Anisha), Nathaniel (Jessica), Jennifer, Amy (Dave), Abraham (Ashley), Reggie Marley, Megan (Clyde), Tiffany (Harold), and Andre (Breanna); 16 great-grandchildren: Sabryn, Eden, Violet, Gemma, Asaph, Melody, Tobias, Benjamin, Josiah, Elijah, Frankie, L’Wren, Gianna, Carter, Camryn, Alexis; niece: Wendy Wilson Broussard Grey and in-law siblings: Ernest Hedric Clay, Costello Johnson and Norvelle Sampson; two great nieces: Salina (Robert) and Quin (Paul); one great nephew: Conscious (partner); and one great-great nephew: Israel Hakim (Mariah).
Sallye J. Johnson lived life out loud, on her own terms, and left an indelible mark on every soul she encountered. We will forever miss her rules, quick wit, outlook on life, black beans and rice, skating Sundays, and the joyful noise she brought into our world.
