Sandy Schapiro of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away on March 31, 2024, at the age of 71. Sandy is survived by her devoted husband Howard Schapiro, sons Michael Schapiro and Ben Schapiro and daughter-in-law Valentina Ossa Schapiro. She is also survived by her precious grandchildren Jacob and Noah Schapiro and her sister Helene Freiman and brother-in-law Gordon Berne. Sandy was predeceased by her beloved parents Rita and Joseph Freiman.
Sandy and Howard fell in love in high school and married in 1974. They would have celebrated their 50th anniversary in August of this year. Sandy was a graduate of Adelphi University and earned her pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland in 1977. She served as a pharmacist at both Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital and St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.
After moving to Bel Air, Maryland, she established the Mid-Week Hebrew program at Temple Adas Shalom, where she taught for 15 years, and later volunteered as a teacher assistant for an adult English as a Second Language program at Harford Community College.
Sandy was a devoted mother to Michael and Ben and took great pleasure in guiding them from childhood to manhood. Her dream of becoming a grandmother was realized when Benjamin and Valentina married in 2022 and soon added Jacob and Noah to the family.
Sandy and Howard moved to Sarasota, Florida, permanently in 2018, where they enjoyed watching the drum circles on Siesta Key, looking for perfect seashells, playing trivia, and spending time with friends. Sandy and Howard became members of Temple Emanu-El, where Sandy was highly involved in social justice efforts. She and Howard were honored with several awards for their commitment and support of Israel through the purchase of Israel Bonds.
We will love and miss her forever. Donations in her memory can be made to the Social Action Committee of Temple Emanu-El (sarasotatemple.org), the All Faiths Food Bank (allfaithsfoodbank.org), or the charity of your choice.
