He is survived by his wife Nancy (Logan) and his son Andrew Bayne as well as 12 siblings. Bernard James Long, Jr., John Michael Long, Mary Frances Leahy , Patricia Ann Johnston, Joseph Edward Long, Francis Bart Long, Elaine Theresa Knuth, Rosemary Ellis, Margaret Ann Roca, Theresa Louise Long, Joanna Sherman, Elizabeth Dale Long. He will be missed by his family and friends.
Stephen graduated from Severn School in 1972 and from the University of Maryland in 1977. He moved to Sarasota in 1978 and discovered his passion for real estate working for John Mikos at the Property Appraiser's Office. He obtained his real estate license and joined Arvida Disney Commercial Division. When Arvida closed this office, he joined Mission Realty managing the Kress Building. He was then given the opportunity to manage a limited partnership, Tomorrow Ltd Series 1, and it was at this time he formed his own broker and consulting company, Logan & Long, Inc. His first project was what would become Burns Court as it is today. With Dick & Sue Morris, founders of the Sarasota Film Society, the Burns Court Theater was built providing a permanent home for the Film Society. Then came Burns Lane Cafe (now Owens Fish Camp), Sarasota Trading Company (now Sarasota Estate Auction), and Palm Villas, to name a few of the projects that make this part of the city a wonderful place to live. Stephen was also involved in the development of Towles Court and Morrill Court. His mission statement was "Dedicated to Making Sarasota a Better Place to Live." He also served on several city boards with a passion for stormwater and how it affects the Bay. Stephen was a complex and intelligent individual, contemplative, a deep thinker, a visionary in terms of what his community could become, devoted and loyal to his family and friends. He exercised regularly at the Y and enjoyed seeing the friends he made there. He was proud to have worked for the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections during the elections and encouraged his family and friends to get involved in the process. He faced his health issues with courage and determination, studying the ancient Stoics and embracing the tenets of Stoic philosophy. His family and friends will remember Stephen as a loving and principled man, a true gentleman.
We will celebrate Stephen's life on a date to follow.
