She leaves a daughter, Laurie Gros of Oakville, CT; a son, Brian Sullivan of Sebastian, FL; 2 sisters, Chico Sumpf of Santa Rosa, CA and Gretchen Welton of Denver, CO; her best and lifelong friend, John Ferreira of Sarasota, FL and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother, Peter Sumpf of Naugatuck, CT.
She graduated from Crosby H.S. and Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing with an RN degree. She worked for many years at Waterbury Hospital in the pediatrics unit until her move to Florida. There she continued her nursing career, working with special needs and terminally ill children at State of Florida Children’s Medical Services, until her retirement.
Susan was one of the founding members of the First Congregational Church Gilbert & Sullivan Troupe and was in all of their productions. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Waterbury and then a member of The Church of the Palms in Sarasota. Susan had a beautiful voice and was in many of the choirs, often singing solos. Her laugh was contagious and one of her greatest attributes.
She loved music and had many enjoyable trips with her daughter to NYC to see Broadway musicals and to shop…always stopping at Godiva Chocolates on 5th Avenue.
Susan was a very talented crafter. Counted cross-stich was her most favorite, along with knitting. If you were fortunate to receive any of her works, you can see the love put into each one. She also loved doing puzzles and was very interested in birds…most especially owls.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or to Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
