Walter was born in New York City on March 11, 1927, the second son of Ruebin and Olive (Lewis) Bellamy. Following the death of his father, Walter, age 2 and his brother Irwin, age 5, were sent to Barbados West Indies to be raised by their maternal aunts. There he completed his primary and secondary education.
Walter returned to the United States and was drafted into the Army in 1950, at the age of 23, during the Korean war. He served for two years and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. During his service days, he had a buddy, Sedrick Bolling, who also lived in New York City. Sedrick introduced Walter to his sister Enid, once they returned home. After a brief courtship, they were married and that marriage produced 4 children: Michael, Debra, Toni and Warren. Walter and Enid purchased their first home in the Bronx, NY, where they raised their family. After they both retired, they purchased a second home in Ft. Lauderdale to escape the brutal winters of the Northeast before finally relocating to Sarasota, Fl.
Walter’s first job in New York was as an elevator operator in lower Manhattan and later, he then gained employment at the General Post Office in Manhattan as a postal clerk. He retired from the post office after more than 35 years of employment. During his years there he received numerous special achievement awards in recognition of his notable performance. It was during his time at the post office that he learned the game of bridge, which became a life-long passion that he continued until age 96.
Walter enjoyed many hobbies and sports activities. As a youngster, he played cricket. He also played golf and tennis and was a member of several bowling leagues. At age 50, he began running and ran several 5k races. He also enjoyed fishing.
Walter is welcomed into eternal peace by his beloved wife, Enid and his brother Irwin. Walter will be forever missed by his children Michael (Charisse), Debra, Toni (Bernard), and Warren (Clarissa); grandchildren Christopher, Walter Perry, Warren Jr., Michelle and Daisha; great grandchildren Harrison, Juniper, Jaxson and Aliyah. He also survived by several loving nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Funeral Services are under the direction of Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home in Sarasota at 12 noon on May 22, 2025. Walter’s Final resting place will be at Palms Memorial Park.
