Karl Craigie Panthen (91), loving husband to Barrie McVickar Panthen of 65 years, and long-time resident of Scarsdale, NY passed quietly in his sleep at home on June 3, 2026. He leaves behind his wife, four children: Donald (Carolyn), Karen (Steven), Kris (Gary), Kathryn (Mark) and two grandchildren: Kyle Panthen and Jordan Panthen. Karl and Barrie were married in Scarsdale, NY at St. James the Less on September 10, 1960. They initially lived in Stuyvesant Town, NYC. Following their marriage, Karl, who was in the Air Force, was recalled to active duty in response to the East Berlin Crisis and deployed to Germany for a year. In 1965, he and his wife moved to Scarsdale, NY.
Karl graduated from Scarsdale High School in 1953 and graduated from Brown University in 1957. Upon graduating he went to work at Chase Bank, following in the footsteps of his parents, Karl A and Constance, who both had been officers at the bank. While at Chase and married, Karl went back to school at New York University and obtained his MBA in 1963. He had a long and successful career with Chase and then subsequently with Wells Fargo (retiring at 83 years old.)
Karl was very active in the community and as an Eagle Scout himself, he was involved with the Boy Scouts with his son, Donald, who is also an Eagle Scout. Karl organized and ran his high school reunions, starting with the 25th and going all the way to the 70th, which was held in 2023. He was a lifelong member of St James the Less, where he will rest. He was also a long-time member of the Union League Club in New York City. Karl loved to be active and when he was not active he spent time with friends, playing bridge and doing the NYT crossword puzzle.
No matter where they lived, they were always involved in the community and bringing people together. They raised wonderful children, traveled extensively and never let anything go by that they wanted to do. Karl loved life and lived every moment to the fullest.
Karl will be missed by many, but mostly by his loving wife, Barrie
Karl will be buried with a full service at St James the Less, Scarsdale, NY on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 2p,m.
