In the heart of Florence, Italy, in the year 1937, Victor and Margherita Sutro welcomed their beloved son, Porter Sutro, into the world. From his earliest days, Porter was surrounded by the rich cultural heritage of his birthplace, which instilled in him a lifelong appreciation for art, history, and the simple joys of life.
Porter's journey led him to the halls of Yale University, where he pursued his education with vigor and curiosity. Porter answered the call to serve his country, proudly enlisting in the U.S. Army. His service was a testament to his dedication and sense of duty.
In the Summer of 1962, on the shores of Nantucket Island, Porter's life took a turn towards love and companionship. There, he met Myra Solby, and the two quickly became inseparable. They married a few months later and spent the next 64 years on a journey of love and partnership.
Family was the cornerstone of Porter's existence. Together with Myra, he raised two sons, David and Nicholas (Suzanne), who were the pride and joy of his life. His role as a father was one he cherished, always striving to provide guidance, love, and support as they carved their own paths in the world.
Porter's professional career spanned many decades in the financial services industry. Known for his integrity and wisdom, he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike. His work was not just a career but a calling, and he approached it with the same dedication he brought to all aspects of his life.
After he retired, Porter remained passionate about the stock market, relishing good market days and cursing the bad ones. He made time for other hobbies -- he was a needlepoint enthusiast, and his creations were proudly displayed at The Osborn where he and Myra lived. He enjoyed the daily challenge of the New York Times crossword puzzle and the Spelling Bee. He loved going to estate sales with Myra, finding a non-working lamp or chandelier, and bringing it back to life with a quick (or not so quick) rewiring job.
Porter's legacy is one of a commitment to excellence. He leaves behind a family who adored him and a community that respected him.
In accordance with his wishes, a private ceremony will be held to honor Porter's life. Those who wish to remember Porter may do so by reflecting on the joy he brought into the lives of others or by considering a donation to a charity of their choice in his honor. Porter's life was one of profound impact, and his spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
