My deepest condolences to the family. I worked with Tim for many years at TIAA as he supported our team as our in-house counsel. He was incredibly smart and thoughtful. I hope he had the opportunity to take some of the trips he discussed as he was retiring.

Eileen, it’s Karen Crockett here.  I just watched the funeral service for Tim and it was a lovely, albeit terribly sad, service.  I take great comfort in knowing that Tim is with our Lord and I look forward to seeing him again.  But, for those of us who loved Tim, the loss is impossible to describe.  And the shock of his sudden death is profound.

Knowing that we will see our loved ones again is incredibly comforting but it does not take the sting out of losing them here on earth—especially when the loss is sooner than it should have been and as sudden as it was with Tim.

When you can, drop a note to let us know how all of you are doing and I hope you take some comfort in knowing Tim will always be loved and never forgotten.  Love, Karen

My sincere condolences to Tim’s entire family. I worked with Tim for decades at TIAA, and all of us who knew and worked with him there are deeply saddened by the news of his passing.

Tim was a favorite of so many of us. He was smart, kind, and extraordinarily generous with his time and expertise. When I joined TIAA in 1983, Tim taught me the legal side of the business, patiently going page by page through documents with me. He had endless patience and an easy way of explaining even the most complex issues.

I never saw Tim lose his temper, even when he would have been completely justified in being angry with our counterparts. He was also a very good businessman, able to explain not just the legal issues but the choices we had to make and the implications of those choices.

Tim was a true gentleman and a wise and generous colleague. I feel very fortunate to have known him and to have learned from him.

I hope your many fond memories of Tim bring you some comfort as you mourn his loss. He will be remembered with great affection and deeply missed.

This picture was taken at our Huck family reunion 6/16/2023 in Sacramento California. We all enjoyed several days of food, fun, catching up, and telling stories.

I mostly remembered this outing from the pictures my dad took. I was so grateful to hear Tim's detailed account of the day from his journal. I enjoyed catching up with Tim at our reunion in 2023, and at a family wedding this summer. He will be missed at upcoming family events.

Tim shared this story with his cousins after seeing pictures I posted on a family website...  

Apparently back in 1967 I kept a diary of various outings on our boat, Ishmael.  My mom later typed up excerpts from the diary.  Below is what I wrote about your [Huck] family’s visit: 

July 1, 1967.  Since Uncle Clem and his family were here, we decided it would be a good idea to take it out.  So at 7:30 in the morning, Dad, Uncle Clem, and most of the kids started out for Cedar Point, our destination.  Mom, Aunt Jeanne, Chris and I stayed home to clean up and prepare food.  We left at 8:45 A.M.  Meanwhile Dad had got there and rented a slip for the boat, put her in the water, and the Number One party of people (Dad, Uncle Clem, Dave, Jon, Greg, Mark, Mike, Kathy) went out for a ride.  As they were coming in after the ride, Group 2 (Mom, Aunt Jeanne, Chris and I) arrived.  Just after this, Dad discovered we had forgotten the crank, so Uncle Clem and Jon went 50 miles or so back home to get it.  Meanwhile the rest of us took a short ride.  While waiting for them to come back we rode on some amusement rides or sat on the boat, waiting.  Tempers flared at this time.  We had just started to eat lunch when Uncle Clem and Jon got back.  We finished a good but crowded lunch on the boat.  After lunch we proceeded to go on a long ride (with everyone) around Cedar Point.  It was a beautiful day and the ride was really enjoyable.  Chris (1 year) liked going fast, and Jon and I sat in the front and got sprayed (which we liked).  Mom didn’t like going fast.  After this ride we put the boat on the trailer and several of us (Dad, Mom, Chris, Dave, and I) started home.  The rest came home later.  Unfortunately the day ended on a hectic note:  we lost our crank coming home!

Tim was one of my late husband’s best friends  since  high school.  He was a winning team mate of “It’s Academic,” the highlight of my husband’s high school career.  😘.  He was a friend of such great faith and our son’s Godfather.  My husband loved to visit him whenever he got to New York for work.  We were so happy to meet his wife, Eileen and visit them on family vacations.  Many great memories.   He was such a blessing to me when my husband passed.  I am very grateful to him and Eileen.   His thoughtfulness and kindness will always be remembered and cherished.

This is Karen Crockett,  a colleague and good friend of Tim’s.  We worked together at TIAA for many years and they were wonderful years, and Tim was one of the reasons they were so great.

Tim was such a wonderful man and his wry smile when we planned some hijinks—which he never actively participated in—is something that I will never forget.  His goodness, quiet love and unfailing support for his friends was truly unusual.  He had such integrity,  grit in the face of  wrongdoing and unyielding support for his friends; it was one of the hallmarks of Tim.  Everybody—yes everybody— loved Tim.  He was such a good person and so understated about his intellect and knowledge.  I learned a lot from Tim about living life and now those lessons are no more.

To say I will miss Tim seems so inadequate.  I feel deep sorrow knowing his wisdom and love are no longer here and I will miss him so very much.

I hadn’t seen Tim for some time due in part to my move to Texas but the FaceTime Jane Dickson and I had with him earlier this year, confirmed that Tim never changed from the amazing man he always was.  I know his good friends and family are going to miss him in unspeakable ways.  Death, for those of us still alive, is so final.

I’m so sorry to learn of Tim’s death. I was one of many outside law firm attorneys who worked with Tim for decades as he guided TIAA investment pros through some very challenging situations and deals. Everyone listened to and respected his calm wisdom and insights. He was one of the best in the business. I remember fondly a retirement lunch we shared with lots of stories and laughs. My heart goes out to the Hodgdon family for losing one of truly finest people in our industry. I can’t imagine the pain in your family, but please know all his peers considered him one of the best. My deep condolences  to Eileen, Claire and Brendan. Tim was truly one of best attorneys I ever worked with. He was an excellent teacher and was well respected both at TIAA and in the private placement industry. He was a man of integrity who I remember had a wry sense of humor and a quiet kindness . I was lucky to work with Tim for many years at TIAA. Brilliant lawyer, unmatched intellect with a great sense of humor. He was a mentor, always had time to explain and teach those coming up behind him, and a true visionary. The industry has lost one of its brightest minds. Condolences to his beloved family.

My heartfelt condolences to Tim's lovely family.   I had the great pleasure of being his colleague, although I did not have the opportunity to work with him directly.  During a TIAA retreat in 2013, we both sneaked out when the white smoke emerged from the conclave in St. Peter's.  While waiting for the new pope's announcement,  we made small talk and found out that we were both Georgetown Hoyas and had Westlake, OH in common (my husband's hometown).   We were ecstatic that a Jesuit had been selected and both lost the bet on whether he would become Ignatius I or Francis Xavier I.    A true man for others here at TIAA, we were happy for him in his retirement but have missed his warm smile and sharp intellect ever since.  May he rest in peace and may his family be comforted by his memory.

My deepest thoughts and condolences  are with Tim's family. It was a pleasure working with Tim. Tim was a brilliant attorney. Occasionally, we would run into each other at the vending machine. Tim preferred the salty snacks! We will miss you!

I had the privilege of getting to know and learn from Tim when I worked with him at TIAA.  He was a great lawyer, a generous teacher, and a warm-hearted colleague.  My condolences to the Hodgdon family.
