

with congestive heart failure. She was born on September 29, 1927 in Chicago, IL to the late Eugenia (Lizen) and Edward Joseph Flynn.
On June 29, 1946, Eugenia married James Prentice Mathis who preceded her in death in 1998. She was also preceded in death by her sister Gloria Berry and her oldest daughter Linda Hoholek-Potter.Eugenia lived most of her life in Hammond, IN just blocks away from her mother and sister. She and her family briefly moved to South Bend, IN from 1964 to 1969. Her husband was an auditor for Hartford Insurance Company located in Chicago but was transferred to the South Bend office. She was happy to return to Hammond when he was transferred back to the Chicago office. In 2012, due to her health, Eugenia moved out of her Hammond home where she had lived for more than 37 years and moved in with her youngest daughter’s family in Laporte until her death.
Eugenia was active in the VFW Women’s Auxiliary for many years. In her younger years, she enjoyed working as a waitress – her favorite place of employment being Cataldi’s in Hammond. She always enjoyed family gatherings. Eugenia also enjoyed going to the casino to try her luck on the slots. She loved animals – especially cats – she gave many their “forever” home - and they loved her in return! Eugenia will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughters: Debbie (Bill) Jensen of Granger, In and Paula (Bob) Glaze of Laporte, In and her son: James Edward (Debra) Mathis of New Bern, NC. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Kari (Todd) McLaughlin, Tracy (Neal) Lechtanski, Sean, Eric and Nicole Glaze, Toni (Keith) VanCuren, Daniel, David and Eugenia (aka Gina) Mathis, Matthew Hoholek, Nathan (Amanda) Hoholek, Mark (Paula) Hoholek ; 19 great-grandchildren; nephew Michael Berry and niece Michelle Berry.Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be on Saturday , February 6, 2016 from 12-3pm CST at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Ave, Schererville, IN. A memorial service will follow the visitation. Her remains will be buried, at a later date, next to her husband in the Veterans section at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. With respect for her love of animals, Eugenia’s family requests memorial contributions be given in lieu of flowers to ASPCA, Pet Refuge or any other animal shelter.
