I am just now finding this out as I went to facebook today to request her as a friend, after I took a break from FB and deactivated my account some time ago.... And I am devastated!!! Penny was my 6th grade teacher @ Field Elementary in East Chicago about 20 yrs ago. She was the most caring and influential teacher I ever had, and she always saw the best in me. My family didnt have the financial means to send me to this summer program that Mrs Banfield had recommended for me to attend so she drove me there herself and picked me up 2 weeks later. Even after I moved on, she would mail me Christmas cards annually until we moved and lost touch. She left a huge impression on me. She truly cared about me and that I will never forget. I went on to become a very bad person throughout my teenage years. I was kicked out of school by 15, in and out of jail, so on and so forth, but I found Jesus in my 20s. I reached out to Mrs Banfield via facebook a couple of years ago and we met in her office at Hale Elementary. We caught up, shared life events, and our mutual love for Jesus. What a great person with a beautiful spirit. I am torn right now, but I know she is peacefully resting in the arms of our Savior. I am saddened that I missed the opportunity to see her one last time. To her family, I pray the peace of God and i give my condolences. I know she is truly missed. God bless.

Bill and Christian, I am so sorry for your loss. I will miss Penny so very much.... So many times I have turned to her for guidance over the years. The Nathan Hale office is so empty without her. Please know that you will be in the thoughts and prayers of your Nathan Hale family.

Insightful, bright, funny, passionate--that's how I remember Penny from our when I met her in the early 80s.  We only reconnected a year or so ago, and briefly, to my great regret, but I have many fond memories of her great warmth, beauty and talent.  She now sings in the heavenly choir where I hope to see her again someday.  My Christian sympathy to her family-- I cannot imagine the depth of your loss.
