Alice was born on January 21, 1934 in Bay Shore, New York, to Kathleen and William Newman. She graduated from East Islip High School as class Valedictorian in June of 1951.
Alice worked for Morris & Mitchell Law Firm after graduation, which was owned by the husband of her business teacher in High School. She worked there until her marriage to Richard Hughes in April of 1956.
In 1962 Alice and Richard moved the family to Phoenix, Arizona to follow the construction boom. She was a stay at home mother, but 5 years after settling in Arizona Alice found herself a single mother with 4 children. These changes lead her back into the work force to make ends meet. She took a job at Time Appliance Service as a bookkeeper for the next 22 years. The company eventually closed their doors, so she took a job with America West Airlines in revenue accounting until they merged with US Airways. Not wanting to relocate, she started working in accounting at Pruitt’s Furniture Store in March of 1995 where she worked for the next 17 years until her retirement in 2012 at the age of 77.
Alice loved spending time with her family, cheering on the Arizona Diamondbacks, and she especially loved her heavenly father.
Alice was an active member of the Mormon Church of Latter Day Saints, where she was baptized August 4, 1963 and got her temple endowment November 5, 1982. She had many active rolls within the church for almost 55 years until her illness.
Survivors include four children, Debra Hughes, Wayne Hughes, Rusty Hughes and wife Debbie, and Wade Hughes all of Phoenix, AZ; a brother Robert Newman; sister-in-laws Betty Anderson and Dottie Newman; 8 grandchildren Jason, Jimmy, Holly, Ryan, Abby, Matt, Allie, and McKenzie and 3 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, William and George (her twin).
Arrangements are under the direction of Green Acres Cemetery in Scottsdale, Arizona. Condolences may be made and viewed online at dignitymemorial.com.
