passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012. She was born
August 17, 1917 in Neola, Iowa to Herbert Nyquist and
Dora Seaburg. She married Harold O. Kuhl from
Harlan, Iowa in 1941, and celebrated 46 years of
marriage before Harold preceded her in death in 1987.
Dorothy was raised in Iowa with her younger brothers,
Wade and Stan, who both preceded her in death. Her
parents owned “City Bakery” in Neola where Dorothy
cashiered for the bakery until she moved to Omaha
Nebraska and later married. Eventually she and her
family also resided in St. Louis, Kansas City, Battle Creek, Minneapolis,
Memphis and Phoenix.
Dorothy’s life was dedicated to and focused on caring for her family. She was
an accomplished pianist and occasionally played the clarinet with the town-
square band in Neola. She also was an amazing cook who was happiest when
she could make special holiday meals for her family. An excellent seamstress,
she made numerous items for friends and family and countless Halloween
costumes for her many grandchildren. Dorothy was a pillar of strength and
character to all who knew her and never complained; as she often said “it didn’t
do any good.”
She moved from Phoenix to Thousand Oaks in 2007 at the age of 90. Dorothy
loved to play bridge and was almost impossible to beat in a game of gin.
She is survived by her daughter Barbara Schnell and son-in-law, Lonnie, of
Thousand Oaks, CA, her son Roger Kuhl and daughter-in-law, Sue, of Rio
Verde, AZ, six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and many admiring
nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was a resident of Sunrise Assisted Living in Westlake Village, CA and
was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church. She was loved by
many and will be greatly missed and remembered for her graciousness, her
kindness and her wit.
A vigil prayer service was held Thursday January 19th at St. Maximilian Kolbe
Catholic Church in Westlake Village, CA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
held Wednesday January 25th at 10:30 am at the Catholic Community of the
Blessed Sacrament located at 11300 N. 64th Street, Scottsdale, AZ.
