Born on November 10, 1949, in Tacoma, Washington, he was the son of Colonel Harold and Betty Bullock.
Doug was a graduate of Clear Creek High School in Texas. He completed both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Arizona State University (Bachelor of Science in Political Science in 1971 and Master of Counseling in 1980).
In June of 1971, Doug was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at Arizona State University. He completed his intelligence technical training school in March 1972 and then was sent to Bergstrom AFB, Texas, where he was assigned to the 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. In 1973 he was assigned overseas with the 432nd Reconnaissance Technical Squadron at Udorn RTAFB in Thailand where he was the chief of the imagery interpretation section. Following his tour in Thailand, in September 1974, he was assigned to the 544th Strategic Intelligence Wing at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, where he completed his active duty career of nearly seven years.
While there, he met his future wife, Mary Nelson of Bellevue, Nebraska. They were married in Bellevue on July 29th, 1978, by her father, Rev. Y.E. Nelson.
They moved a month later to Arizona where their family grew over the next seven years with the addition of Kristin (1983) and Greg (1985).
After separating from active duty in August, 1978, Doug joined AFIA and became a member of Intelligence Reserve Detachment (IRD) 10 at March AFB in California. After nearly a year with this detachment, he became a founding member of IRD 37 at Luke AFB, Arizona, where he served as the Commander, Executive Officer, Operations and Training Officer, and Personnel Officer in his almost fourteen years with this unit. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Air Force Reserves in 1995 after a combined service of twenty-four years.
His military decorations and awards include: the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award Ribbon, Nomination for Ten Outstanding Young Omahans, and many others.
When not fulfilling his Air Force Reserve duties, Doug worked and advocated for students in the Maricopa Community College District beginning in 1981. Being a veteran himself, he started at Phoenix College working in the Veteran’s Office. He then moved to Mesa Community College in 1984 and began working in financial aid. In 1989 he was asked to start the financial aid office for Chandler Gilbert Community College. He was the founding Financial Aid Director for CGCC, and he later became the Associate Dean of Enrollment Services for the college.
Doug was very student centered and always put the students’ needs and concerns first.
In 2008, he was presented the Robert Thompson Memorial Leadership Award for his commitment to the financial aid profession in Arizona. After thirty years, he retired in 2011 from the Maricopa Community College District.
Doug will be remembered for having such an impact on his family and his community through his advice, words of wisdom, kindness, poetry writing, love of sports and music, and of course his infamous wit. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Tim Nelson, and brother-in-law Philip Nelson.
He is survived by the family that he loved dearly, including his wife, Mary Bullock of Tempe, Arizona; his daughter Kristin Schneider and husband Drew of Scottsdale, Arizona; his son Greg Bullock and wife Erica of Tempe, Arizona; his brother Rick Bullock of Chandler, Arizona; his brother Bruce Bullock of Houston, Texas; his sister Leslie Tegeler and husband Tom of Gilbert, Arizona; his brother Mike Bullock and wife Nichole of Scottsdale, Arizona; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
