Duane Nelson 78’ went to be with the Lord on Friday June 24 after a 3-month battle with heart disease. He was a devoted husband, a father, and above all, a proud American. He was honored to serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After his discharge, he returned to Chicago with the love of his life, Mary. Together, they raised a family in suburban Chicago, during which time Duane spent 32-years working in the construction industry. In 1985, Duane and Mary moved to Negaunee to buy Fischer Chevrolet-Oldsmobile with their son Kirk. For 15 wonderful years they flourished as part of the Upper Peninsula family. Duane particularly wanted to say “thank you” to all of his past customers and friends for the support and loyalty over the years. In 2000, the family sold the business and Duane and Mary retired and moved Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Duane always tried to live life to the fullest, and through hard work, was able to achieve many of his dreams. He was thankful for his many friends that enriched his life each and every day, and most of all, his beloved wife Mary that stood by his side for 59 years.
In addition to Mary, Duane is survived by his son Kirk (Colleen) of Carmel, Indiana, daughter Cindy (Lee) Shaw of Schaumburg, Illinois,7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, his best friend and companion Mitzi, and special friends Scot and Kay Fure and John and Jean Korhonen. The service will be at the Green Acres Mortuary and Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85257 on July 6 at noon with a luncheon immediately following to celebrate Duane’s life. In lieu of flowers any contributions can be made to Marquette County Humane Society in Negaunee in Duane’s name.
