

Sturgill, Fred Maynard 88, went to be with the Lord on February 26, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born March 14, 1926 in McAlpin, West Virginia to Owen Burr Sturgill and Minnie Luella Blevins. He was a World War II veteran and served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 and in the United States Army Air Force from 1947 to 1950. Fred married Bonnie, his high school sweetheart, in January, 1950. Fred and Bonnie had two children, Eugenia and Fredda. The family left West Virginia and moved to Phoenix in 1958. They purchased a home in Scottsdale, helped take care of their grandchildren, and developed many friendships over the years. In 1988, Fred and Bonnie fulfilled a life-long dream and moved to Heber, Arizona to live in the cabin that Fred designed and built. In 1996, they moved to Tempe where they made their home for many years. In 2011 they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to be close to their daughter, Fredda. Fred worked as coal miner for a few years and then as a carpenter for over 40 years. Many friends and family members enjoy patios, china cabinets and bookshelves built by Fred. For many years, Fred served as a loving caregiver for his wife Bonnie. He lived an exemplary life as a husband, father and grandfather and set an example for all. Fred is survived by his two daughters, Eugenia (Edward) of Parker, CO and Fredda (Craig) of Las Vegas, NV, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie and his grandson Christopher Hodenpel. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, March 6 and funeral Services will be held at 9:30 AM, Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Green Acres, 401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale, Arizona 85257. Flowers can be sent to Green Acres or donations can be sent to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) or Wounded Warriors.
