Gary Dean Tahmahkera, 62, born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away on August 30, 2023, in Scottsdale, AZ. He was a loving, caring, and passionate individual. Gary is survived by his wife Roelene Tahmahkera, 9 children, 15 grandchildren, his father Garrison Tahmahkera, his mother Donna Pena (Grummon), and his sister Nita Atkins.
Gary pursued higher education and obtained multiple degrees; an Associate’s of General Studies at Scottsdale Community College, a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice and Management at Charter Oak State College, a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology at Arizona State University, and a Master of Library Science at Arizona State University.
In his early years, Gary served in the military from 1979 to 1992. He began his journey as an active Combat Medic before he served in the Arizona Army National Guard as a Sergeant and in the United States Army Reserve as a First Lieutenant in the Air Defense Artillery.
Following his military service, Gary embarked on a fulfilling career. From 1989 to 2004, he served as a member of the Salt River Police Department, he was appointed Chief of Police February 2, 1997, where he contributed to maintaining the safety and security of the community. In 2007, Gary joined Arizona State University, where he worked until his retirement in 2022.
Outside of his professional life, Gary had a variety of hobbies that brought him joy. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren, going to the movies, and traveling to California. He was also an avid supporter of ASU football and enjoyed watching Dr. Who.
Gary Tahmahkera will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His legacy of love and dedication will forever be remembered.
A Graveside Committal Service for Gary will be held Friday, September 8, 2023, 8:30 AM at Green Acres Mortuary & Cemetery, 401 North Hayden Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85257.
