Howard was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He
attended LaSalle College, and graduated from Temple University Medical School, after which
he served his residency and fellowship at the University of Michigan. He became a lifelong fan
of Michigan Football (Go Blue!). Following his training, he served two years of active duty in the U.S. Army as a medical officer at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He then moved with his family to
Mesa, where he was a practicing neurologist until his retirement in 2000. He married his
second wife, Susan, whom he referred to as Kallah, in 1995, and they spent many happy years
together.
Howard’s great passions were the art and science of medicine and Judaism. He embraced
Jewish history and music. He especially loved liturgical music and enjoyed leading services
and performing as a cantorial soloist for many different congregations throughout his life.
He enjoyed traveling and his favorite places were Hawaii, Paris, and Israel.
Most of all, Howard loved his children, Shoshana (deceased), Jax (Jacqueline), and Stewart,
and granddaughter Harli, whose presence these last 8 years brought unmitigated joy to his life.
Howard is survived by his wife Susan Katz, daughter Jax, son Stewart, granddaughter Harli,
and sister Gail Schwartz.
Howard was laid to rest on September 10, 2024 at Green Acres Cemetery, Scottsdale, Arizona.
Zichrono livrakha - May his memory be a blessing.
