Joan’s life and passion shined brightly on her family, her friends, and all who knew her. Joan was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1942. Like her brother and her uncle, she became a hairdresser. In 1963 she married Anthony Scerbo, who was also a hairdresser. They met when she was 13 and he was 15. She had two children, John and Anthony. As a young woman she raised two sons while caring for her mother and grandmother.
Joan and her extended family would eventually move to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1979. It was there that Joan’s second act began, working alongside her husband at the family business, Stylarama, which endured at the corner of Scottsdale and Shea until Anthony and Joan retired in 2021. She and Anthony, and for many years their son John, styled thousands of heads of hair as the decades rolled by. She somehow found the time to be a second mom to so many in her home life and at the salon.
Joan leaves behind her husband Anthony, her sons Anthony and John, daughters in law Ann Hocken Scerbo and Suzanne Plato Scerbo, grandsons Anthony Scerbo and Robert Scerbo, granddaughters Emily Scerbo and Jessica Scerbo, countless nieces, nephews, and cousins, and legions of customers whom she considered family.
It was a life well spent. And she will be well remembered.
