June Claire Kinney
June 29, 1934 – May 13, 2024
June Claire Kinney (nee Engelmeyer, formerly Van Tilburg), born on June 29, 1934, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2024, surrounded by her loving children and the memories of a life well-lived. June was a woman whose warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was known for her constant beautiful smile.
June was the beloved mother of 5 children: Lisa Wintermute (Bob), John Van Tilburg, Leslie Wheelock (Ron), Julie Van Tilburg, and Alison Van Tilburg. June's love extended beyond her immediate family to embrace 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Her family pets, including her African Parrot Gracie and her Dachshund Mattie (who she rescued when she was 80 years old) were her greatest joy in her later years.
June was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Grace & Lawrence Engelmeyer. Her family relocated to Dearborn, Michigan when June was a teenager, where she would spend the next 30+ years raising her 5 children. She was also actively involved in tennis and charity work.
After college, June embarked on a career with the airlines, where she shared her infectious smile and genuine warmth with countless travelers. Later, she transitioned into a successful real estate career, showcasing her determination and business acumen. June's professional journey was a testament to her resilience and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Upon retiring, June spent several years in Clearwater, Florida before relocating to Scottsdale, Arizona in 2012 to live out her final years. Her retirement years were filled with the laughter of family gatherings, travel, and the comfort of shared moments. A passion for knitting became a defining aspect of June's life during this chapter, and she lovingly crafted scarves for friends and family alike. It was a reflection of her caring nature — always wanting to wrap others in warmth, both literally and figuratively.
June's journey through life included two significant marriages. She was first married to John F. Van Tilburg for 17 years, with whom she had 5 children. Later, she found love again with Joseph C. Kinney, to whom she was married for 14 years, and with whom she embraced 3 stepsons.
June Kinney was not just a mother, but a beacon of love and compassion for her family and friends. Her bright personality, genuine interest in others, and the love she showered upon her family will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew her. Tragically, she also faced the loss of her dear brother, Robert Engelmeyer, years ago, leaving a void that time could not erase.
As we say our goodbyes, let us celebrate a life well-lived and honor the legacy of a remarkable woman who brought joy to all who were fortunate enough to share in her journey.
A private memorial to celebrate June's life will be held near her home in Arizona. May her soul rest in eternal peace and may the memories of her love bring comfort to those who mourn her passing.
