Mary was a cherished member of our community, known for her unwavering kindness, wisdom, and generosity.
Born on July 5, 1932, Mary lived a life full of purpose and joy. She graduated from high school and immediately begin working full-time as a telephone operator. Shortly after graduating she met and began dating Gene Guinn. Four years later they married on September 17, 1955 at the Center Street Church of Christ located in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Five years later, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy named David. Their second, Nancy, was born four years later.
Mary was a dedicated wife and mother. She dedicated many years to supporting her children’s extra-curricular activities including Cub Scouts, Brownie’s troops, chess club, high school band and orchestra, competitive speed swimming, ballet, gymnastics and synchronized swimming. She spent countless hours at the gym or poolside and was also active in carpooling the kids to practice sessions and competitive meets. She was an accomplished seamstress and spent much of her time sewing costumes, swimsuits, etc. Mary's love of birds was evident to all who knew her as she spent time keeping all her backyard birds fed and watered and planting to attract the birds, bees and butterflies to her garden. There was no place that made her happier than being outside doing yardwork.
After Mary’s kids were grown, she wished to return to work so she took a typing class at Mesa Community College and later landed an administrative assistant position supporting a team of engineers at AlliedSignal. They wanted her to become a permanent, full-time employee but she was more interested in part-time work so she transitioned to the role of church secretary at the Tempe Church of Christ.
She also supported her husband’s career endeavors and entertained his co-workers at their home on multiple occasions. In her husband’s later years when he suffered multiple health challenges and surgeries, her constant unwavering support ensured he received the care needed.
Mary is survived by son David (Sandy) Guinn (Mesa) and daughter Nancy Guinn (Mesa) who will forever hold her memory close, along with a host of other extended family, friends and neighbors.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Gene Guinn and grandson Justin Guinn along with all four of her sisters, Thelma, twins Eutha and Eula, Doris and her brother Sherman.
