

Ray Bowen Newman passed away on February 8, 2017. He was born in Wilsall, Montana on August 11, 1922. Ray is survived by his wife Hazel, daughter Dianna Steres and her husband Gary, his son Terry Newman and his wife Judy, his 8 grandchildren and his 21 great-grandchildren. His parents were Dona (Bowen) and George Newman.
Football was Ray's passion. Ray was a highly successful junior college football coach and a professional football scout for over 28 years. He signed Warren Moon to his first professional football team, the Edmonton Eskimos. During his tenure as the very successful college coach in Bakersfield College, he touched the lives of many young athletes-men who used the lessons learned from Coach Newman to launch outstanding careers. His players stayed in touch, visiting Coach and sharing their lives and acknowledging lasting importance to them.
Ray and Hazel divided their time between homes in Phoenix, Arizona and Missoula, Montana. Ray loved his Montana life where he kept a productive vegetable garden and he and Hazel spent summers canning vegetables, fishing streams and enjoying many friendships.
