

Sophie Josephine Simons Braaten died on March 25, 2019 at Hospice of the Valley in Glendale, Arizona after a short illness. She was born on October 6, 1920 in Harvey, Illinois to her parents, Joseph and Carrie Simons. She married Floyd Harold Braaten in 1940 in Harvey, Illinois. The Braatens moved to Phoenix in 1951. Sophie was a loving and nurturing mother and grandmother to her large family. She was a bookkeeper at Creighton School District until her retirement. She and Floyd were dedicated volunteers with their church, community, and the Boy Scouts. In her retirement, Sophie founded a group which knit caps and provided them along with onesies for newborns at Maricopa Medical Center.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara and Carrie, and sons-in-law, Fraser and Rick; her sons, Floyd Jr. and wife Pat, and Tom and wife Susan; ten grandchildren, Erin, Mike, Floyd III, Michael, Joey, Teri Lynn, Shawn, Scott, Kristin, and Kimberly; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; brother, Joseph; and son, Donald.
Burial will be a private ceremony. An outdoor Celebration of Life will take place on April 2 at 9:30 a.m. at Fellowship Square, 11830 N 19th Ave, Phoenix, Arizona 85029. The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Valley in Glendale for their sincere, excellent care.
