Susan was born September 12, 1949, in Garden City, Kansas, to Rev. Ronald and Ruth Shotton, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her siblings – Pamela Showell of Greenfield, Indiana, Rodney Shotton of Mesa, Arizona, and Phoebe Ash of Chandler, Arizona. She is also survived by her husband, Dr. Merle C. Turner; her three children – Ryan Turner, Jennifer Newell, and Chad Turner; and her three grandchildren – Isabella Newell, Gabriella Newell, and Jeremiah Newell.
At a very young age Susan was nicknamed “Spitfire,” and she valiantly fought multiple cancers just as her nickname would suggest. Church was always a central part of Susan’s life. She made a decision to follow Christ at the age of 11 and impacted the lives of countless people who crossed her path throughout the years. She was never afraid to share her faith. Susan graduated from Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana.
Susan was also instrumental in helping start Mountain Park Church, where she faithfully served for many years. She especially loved working with youth and found great joy in teaching and mentoring young people in their faith.
Professionally, Susan built and managed a successful medical practice alongside her husband. She took great pride not only in the work they accomplished, but in the people who worked alongside them. Susan had a gift for mentoring her staff, many of whom became like family over the years.
Outside of work, Susan loved spending time near the ocean and especially cherished trips to Mexico and time at the beach. Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She was a devoted grandmother who rarely missed her grandchildren’s games and activities, always cheering enthusiastically from the sidelines. She also loved baking with them, playing cards, and creating memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.
Susan will be remembered for her strong faith, her generous heart, her determination, and the love she poured into her family, friends, church, and community. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched and in the family she loved so deeply.
A memorial service will be held Monday, March 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Mountain Park Church,16461 S 48th St, Phoenix, AZ 85048.
