Ching-yen Hsiao was born in China on October 23, 1930. Her family eventually emigrated to Seattle and she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington. She then embarked on a successful 30+ year career in the Seattle Public Library system, where she held a series of positions with increasing responsibility until her retirement.
After retirement, she continued to pursue her many interests. She attended art history courses at the University of Washington, joined a fitness center, listened to classical music and opera, and read everything from history to philosophy to biographies. She always had a large stack of books by her favorite reading chair, along with her daily crossword puzzle. She served as the Secretary on the Board of Directors of her condominium association for many years. She enjoyed visiting family in many parts of the U.S. as well as international destinations such as China, Australia, and New Zealand.
Along with these activities, she was generous with her time and support for her family and friends. Her friendships were lasting and deep, many held for decades. She met and formed friendships with people from all aspects of her life: work friends, neighbors, and family friends. She helped many people, listening and providing invaluable wisdom—invariably laced with good humor and laughter—in meaningful and ongoing conversations over the years.
Ching-yen is survived by her sister, sister-in-law, 6 nieces and nephews, and 11 grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was a beloved family member, trusted confidante, and loyal friend. She will be dearly missed
