After graduating from West Seattle High School in 1970 he joined the Air Force, where he honed his discipline and resilience—qualities that would serve him well in life.
After being honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1974, Don entered the workforce as a cook and manager for a family style restaurant where he met the love of his life, Carol Ann Wells, a single mom of seven who applied for a waitress position. That work relationship blossomed into something more - a committed marriage lasting 43 years.
During their marriage they became proud parents of six additional children. Don instilled in his sons the values that he held dear: hard work, loyalty, and fearlessness. He taught them to face challenges head-on and to never shy away from adversity.
Don eventually retired as a manager for the Liquor Control Board in 2012.
Among his many interests, Don found immense joy in the strategic card game cribbage and the mental challenge of crossword and sudoku puzzles. These hobbies not only engaged his analytical mind but also provided a source of relaxation and satisfaction, especially when he “skunked” an opponent.
An avid reader, Don found solace and adventure within the pages of fantasy novels. His love for sports was equally profound, as he eagerly cheered for his favorite teams – particularly his son’s little league, engaging in spirited discussions about game strategies.
In addition to his love for sports and literature, Don had a green thumb. He found peace in gardening, nurturing plants with the same care and patience he showed in all his endeavors.
Despite facing the formidable challenge of cancer, Don approached his illness with courage and an unwavering spirit. He found companionship and joy in his loyal pet dog Kush, who was always by his side, particularly during his toughest of times. His battle with cancer will forever be marked by resilience and positivity, inspiring all who knew him.
Don’s life was a rich tapestry of interests and experiences, and his legacy continues to be remembered with love and admired by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Don is survived by his children Donald Andrew, Stephen, Daniel, John and Kenneth, his stepchildren Theresa, Wanda, Dorothy, Vernon, Mary, Patrick, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother Marjorie McElhose, brothers Rick McElhose and Bob McElhose. He is preceded in death by his wife Carol Ann Wells, daughter Julia McElhose, stepson Eric Wells, and father Robert McElhose.
A remembrance of his life will be held Friday, October 25, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 6701 30th Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98126.
