Frances and her husband Frank came to Seattle from Lincoln, Nebraska with her nephew Clarence in 1941, with only twenty dollars in their pockets. They sold everything they could and stuffed the rest and themselves into a 1937 green Willys coupe with only a front bench seat. The trip took three days and three nights. Talk about up close and personal! The car lights went out in Boise so there was a slight delay before they could continue on. Frank's sister Helen made a bet with Frances that Frank wouldn't stay two months in rainy Seattle. If he did, Helen would give Frances a weeks wages. Not only did Frank and Frances remain in Seattle, the rest of the Craig clan, seven siblings and their families, followed them. Helen herself came here in less than five months, in spite of the rain. Since the move took place during WWII, there was plenty of work and Frank and Frances quickly found jobs.
Frank and Frances began a family in 1943. They opened their home to many family members, and Frances was always willing to share their home. The first house they built was a 20x28 foot four room house in little old Lake City with no closets, where they lived for about nine years, then was followed by several moves each within four blocks of the last home. Their live's were built by two strong people with love, style and grace, and their homes have been places that gathered family and friends to celebrate special occasions with those they love best; where the door was always open to those drawn there.
