Georg Kjonsvik passed peacefully at the age of ninety-one after a period of declining health and a brief illness in Seattle, WA on the morning of January 5, 2023. His last days were spent in the loving company of his treasured family.
Born in Strinda, Norway to Gustav and Parsoini Marie Kjonsvik, Georg had two brothers, Odd and Harry. A couple of his uncles had emigrated to the US in previous years, so Georg followed suit, moving to the US in 1955 to pursue a new life in Seattle. Georg maintained close family ties, both with his cousins John and Ron in the US, while cherishing weekly phone calls with his brother Harry and making many return trips to Norway over the years.
Following a brief time in the Norwegian Air Force, Georg joined the US Army. He was stationed at Fort Ord, CA from June 1956 to June 1958, including 18 months of overseas duty in Germany. As an Infantryman (SP3), he was awarded both Marksmanship and Good Conduct medals. To his great delight, Georg became a naturalized US Citizen on Sept 11, 1961.
Until his retirement, Georg spent his adult life working in the trades via Local #440, Laborers, Street Pavers and Tunnel Workers. He was a Distinguished Gold Card Member of Local #440 with over fifty years of service, a very rare accomplishment. His longest single period of employment was with Nicholson Concrete Pipe Co. (18.5 years) where Pres. C.M. Nicholson once noted Georg’s “honesty, reliability and work relations are well above the average”.
Georg had many connections and affiliations with the Norwegian culture and community in Ballard. He was a Golden member of the Sons of Norway and Leif Erikson Lodge, where he regularly volunteered his time and enjoyed countless Kaffestua gatherings. He also enjoyed spending time at Norway Park at Lake McMurray with family and friends throughout each passing year.
Georg married Ella Louise McCulloch, the love of his life on Nov 11,1978. They resided at first in Seattle and then retired for many peaceful years in Lynnwood, WA, enjoying 33 wonderful years together until Ella’s passing in 2012.
Georg was preceded in death by his brother Odd (Anna), wife Ella, stepson Dennis, and his US cousins,John (Sandra) and Ron (Linda O.).
He is survived in the US by his step-children Kenneth, David and Susan, Ella’s nieces and nephew Terry, Crystal and Rick, as well as his beloved second-cousins Linda H, Kris, Doug, Karen and Gregory.
He is survived in Norway by his brother Harry (Aslaug) and nieces and nephews Tone, Britt, Geir, Frode, Janne and Heidi, along with several other cousins on his father and mothers side.
There will be an open house to honor and remember Georg at Leif Erikson Lodge, 2245 NW 57th St., Seattle, WA 98107 on Saturday January 21st from 1:00 to 3:00 pm following a private graveside service.
