Gertrude Jeanne (Rasmussen) Bell
April 24, 1926 – September 28, 2018
Gertrude Jeanne Bell was born April 24, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, and passed away in Seattle on September 28, 2018. Her parents, Hans and Ruth Rasmussen, moved the family west in 1930 and settled in Mt. Vernon, Washington. Gertrude finished high school there in 1944, and entered the University of Washington, obtaining a degree in education. She met and married Robert Milligan in 1946, and their son Frederick Scott Milligan was born in 1948. Gertrude taught primary grades in the Edmonds School District until taking early retirement in 1970. She then pursued her second career, oil painting. She married John Allen Bell in 1977 and together they were active in the Inglewood Country Club in Kenmore. She was a member of St. Barnabas Anglican church, and served on the Altar Guild.
Gertrude was an avid reader, often finishing four books a week. She faithfully completed the N.Y. Times Sunday crossword puzzles, and stayed current on political issues. She enjoyed her pets, and her last two rescue dogs Sadie and Tuk Tuk provided wonderful companionship in her later years. Gertrude was blessed with the gift of friendship throughout her life, and had a group of cherished lifelong friends. She was loved and will be greatly missed by all.
Gertrude is survived by her sister, Janet Stover of Seattle, son Rick Milligan of Bothell, granddaughter Rachel Milligan, nieces, nephews, and a great niece and great nephew. There will be a private family ceremony held at a later date.
Thank you to the Providence Home Health team, and the doctors and nurses at the University of Washington hospital for their excellent care of Gertrude in her final days. Contributions in Gertrude's name may be made to the Seattle Humane Society.
