Biography of Lucille Mary Fillion
October 10, 1923 – February 28, 2008
Born in St. Paul, Minnesota and passed away in Seattle, Washington.
Words to describe Lucille: remarkable woman, beautiful lady, hard working, thoughtful, very religious, loved everyone, lots of laughter, dedicated to her family, a complete woman.
Lucille was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on October 10, 1923 to Eva and Edward Charley. She was “100% Lebanese and Proud of It;” her parents came from Lebanon in the early 1900's. She was from a family of three girls and three boys and was the second oldest child. Lucille attended St. Mathew's Catholic School and worked for the priests and nuns after school to help pay for her tuition, as well as working for the rectory at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Lucille met Gilbert S. Fillion, who was a friend of her older brother. They married June 1, 1942. When Gib was in WWII, Lucille went to work for Northwest Airlines as “Rosy the Riveter” position. After the war was over they lived in various places until they could afford to buy a house on Curtis Street; by then they had five children. Mom made the most with what she had and survived taking care of her children, supporting her husband and his TV Repair Business, looking in on her mother and daughter Dorothy, belonging to PTA, March of Dimes, cooking, cleaning, gardening and running the household. She was a remarkable woman.
Lucille loved being married and raising her children. She tried to instill many good habits in her children like being polite, always having our manner hats on, how important it was to have a clean house, vacuum, dust, wash and dry dishes, make our beds every day and keep our bedrooms real clean. We stayed busy all the time since we had a big house and yard. Dad taught the boys to mow the lawn and trim the hedge. Mom and Dad kept a big, beautiful vegetable garden every summer, and Mom took on the chore of canning them and keeping a fruit cellar. Mom was very religious and belonged to the Catholic Church, where we went to church every week wearing our Sunday best - washed, starched and ironed. Mom was very proud of us, you could tell by her pleased smile. She prayed the rosary and prayer cards all of her life, especially St. Therese, who shed her lots of rose petals; she was being looked after from above for being such a great person.
Mom enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas with a beautiful tree full of tinsel, lots of homemade cookies, fancy wrapped gifts, decorations and Christmas carols. She was a happy person and always singing.
We moved to Seattle in 1962, right in time for the World's Fair that we attended a few times. We rented a couple homes and then found one to buy; Mom cleaned and painted it and made it our lovely home. Mom went to work for ABM at SeaTac Airport mostly cleaning concourse B. She loved her job and being around the public and got to see many movie stars throughout her working years.
Mom worked until she turned 70 and then retired with Dad and enjoyed a couple years of fishing and camping. She spent a few years in an adult care facility, then went to a nursing home for the remainder of her life. Dad was really devoted to her, feeding her twice a day, and we had every holiday celebration with her. She was visited a lot by her family and enjoyed by the staff and roommates too. She will truly be missed by everyone whose life was touched by her and will remain in our hearts forever!
Lucille was survived by a husband, six children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is loved by everyone. May God Bless Lucille Mary Fillion forever!
