Girin was  a real friend I met at the UW.  He introduced me to Indian foods which I am very fond of.  We even had taken a group camping and hiking at Monte Christo.  
I remember him playing the Tabla and having Ravi Shankar's drummer ALah Raka come to his restaurant after and international show at the Seattle Center.

Girindra Das contributed significantly to Boeing Structures Engineering during his tenure.  I  worked with him since the 1970's until my retirement in 2001.
Girin was soft spoken but mastered fundamental principles of structural evaluations.  He assumed responsibility for 777 Full Scale Fatigue Testing additions to address consequences of knife marks  to remove masking after chemical milling. This was a stressful assignment  requiring careful considerations of consequences of unexpected fatigue failure of the pressurized fuselage. Girin also co-authored a  presentation to the 1999 International Conference of Aeronautical Fatigue.
I was fortunate to make the successful nomination of Girin to Technical Fellow, a well deserved recognition which Girin  used well to provide mentoring of engineers.
Girin joins a distinguished group of Boeing structures engineers
making significant contributions and will be remembered.

I worked with Girin on and off for many years between 1985 and 2016.  He made many important contributions to Boeing and the aerospace structures industry. He was smart, patient, accomplished, and above all, a kind soul. 
He will be missed by all who got to know him.

I was privileged to have known Girin Das and to have worked with him and learned so much from him.  It is no understatement that he contributed as much to the safety of commercial flying as anyone.

Girin was one of the folks I encountered in my career who can best be described as quietly competent.  I was new to big companies when I came to Boeing in 1987, having just learned the basics of the language of fracture mechanics.  When it came time to put this to work in the real world, I was so relieved to find that Girin was not only fluent but a great teacher.  I knew that I would meet some brilliant people at Boeing, but Girin stood out – not only knowledgeable, but kind and patient.  He was always available, and he was the greatest problem-solver.  What should have taken an hour’s discussion he would dispatch in 5 minutes.  He was completely respected by all at Boeing.  Later, when I moved to the FAA, I found him, unsurprisingly, to be equally valued by those of us who were his counterparts there.

I still fondly recall one of the Christmas lunches (pot-lucks) in our office, when Girin brought a huge tub of curried lamb from his restaurant – how he found time to both run such a great place and still be a national resource is a mystery to me.  I took some of the curry home for my wife to sample, and with one taste, she insisted that we dine at the India House.  We did, and we were not disappointed, especially when Girin came out from the back office to visit with us.

Then, reading here of his life’s story, to find out that he was an accomplished musician !!!  Knowing of everything else he has done, I was not surprised.

Girin was also so helpful in answering all my questions before my first mission tour to India – my first trip to that part of the world.  He took the time to explain what to expect, and what to do and not do – and everything that he told me was put to use.

To the Das family,

My deepest sympathy on the passing of Girin. I always looked up to Girin for any DTA questions. He had always been kind and patient.

One time, I called Girin for help for 747 fleet support repair and he told me to come up to his desk. Well, unbeknown to me, he had 4 other folks with him. He told me that he was mentoring these folks and wanted them to learn. That's what he had always been. A mentor to us all.

He will be missed. Thank you, Girin, for sharing your wisdom, kindness and knowledge  with us all. It has been a privilege to know you.

I had the privilege of working with Girin for 10 years at Boeing.  Ever since our first meeting, I knew immediately how fortunate I was to be able to call him a colleague.  Girin was an awe-inspiring human being and a legend in the field of structural integrity and damage tolerance.  But he was forever humble and always willing to patiently educate others like myself.  I will forever cherish my time with Girin.  I can still hear the sound of his laughter and those memories will always warm my heart.

This photo was taken in June 2015 during a business trip to Helsinki, Finland, when we attended the ICAF Conference (International Committee on Aeronautical Fatigue and Structural Integrity).  Here we enjoyed a nearly 3-hour dinner together that I will never forget.

I worked with Girin more than 20 years in designing new airplanes and supporting the flying Boeing fleet. He was a well-educated aerospace engineer with outstanding knowledge and experience of aircraft durability and damage tolerance. He was a high-level professional making the flight safety of Boeing airplanes his primary priority without any compromise in reaching that goal.

He was a soft speaking man, taking care do not hurting inadvertently anybody feelings. He had empathy to different opinions, and  always his first reaction was to convince his opponents by logic and rationale. He was excellent and natural teacher with great influence on Boeing young engineers.  

We lost a nice guy, and my deepest sympathy goes out to his family at this difficult time.

Dr. Girin Das was a phenomenal individual. His ethics, hard work and mastery in developing engineering methods was second to none.  On his deminer, he was a great friend to all. I know this wonderful man for over 36 years. He was even-keeled and calm individual that gave you the comfort to know that what he is saying is well-researched and sound in every way possible. He was always respectful to everyone around him. He appreciated his peers and was a great mentor to young engineers, like me. 
The world has lost a great man! Rest in peace my dear friend! You will be remembered by many people that you touched their lives.

Girin was a long time member of the Structures Engineering community at Boeing. I worked with him in varying capacities for almost 40 years with the last 20 in almost daily contact. His role was to help ensure the structural integrity of Boeing Commercial planes. He was skilled at training our future generations providing quality education to engineers throughout the enterprise.  His knowledge of the Boeing 747 and other Everett models was difficult to match. The photo shows Girin in 2013 along with some of his colleagues.
