

He was born in Assam, India on January 1st, 1941. He was the oldest of five and the only son of the late Sitaram Das and Kanak Lata Das.
He was raised in Guwahati, Assam where he attended primary and high school before attending St. Edmund’s College in Shillong. He completed his B.Tech (honors) and M. Tech in civil engineering at IIT Kharagpur in 1963.
Girin was the first Assamese person to move to the Pacific Northwest in 1965, where he came to further his education at the University of Washington. Here he earned a second MS degree and a double doctorate in civil engineering and materials science, while also starting his engineering career at the Boeing Company in 1966.
Girin proudly opened one of the first Indian restaurants in Seattle, called India House, in 1970. At various times during its 30+ years of operation, he was able to sponsor 7 professional chefs from New Delhi to come work at the restaurant.
Girin had a talent and passion for Indian music, playing the tabla (Indian drums) for many years. He studied with tabla masters in Guwahati and played during his time at both IIT Kharagpur and the University of Washington. He has played with the likes of esteemed musicians such as sitarist Ravi Shankar, percussionist Zakir Hussain, and one of his favorite Assamese singers, Bhupen Hazarika.
Girin was honored to work for the Boeing Company for 50 years as an engineer, earning the title of Technical Fellow in structural and damage technology. He had the opportunity to teach and give lectures all over the world, as well as mentor countless younger generations throughout his time at Boeing.
Girin was a kind, loving and wonderful family man. He enjoyed his daily yoga practice, international family vacations, music, and all kinds of food. Girin is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Leslie Das, his daughter Bijoya ‘BJ’ Das, and son Nikhil Das (Lauren), along with family members and friends in the US, India and beyond.
A visitation for Girin will be held Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Acacia Funeral Home, 14951 Bothell Way NE, Seattle, Washington. A ceremonial shraddha will occur Monday, August 21, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Vedic Cultural Center, 1420 228th Ave Se, Sammamish, Washington.
