Betty was born in Starkweather, North Dakota on February 8, 1930. She was the only child of Margaret and Charles Sanders and lived in Devils Lake, N.D until the age of 12. She and her parents then moved to Seattle in 1942 and bought a home on 1st Ave NE. Betty fell in love with Seattle and thought she had come to the Emerald City of OZ. She attended Catholic schools in N.D. and Seattle, also public schools in Seattle and Bremerton.
Betty married a military man, Chet Holloway in 1953 and spent 50 years together before Chet passed away in 2004. After their first year of marriage stationed at Fort Lawton, the young couple spent the next 22 years traveling Army style from Alaska to Alabama; from Maryland to California and points in between while also raising a large family. She felt so enriched by this lifestyle and often said, "I have had a wonderful life!" During those years Betty worked as a cashier, bookkeeper, small business owner, loving mother and housewife. The family returned to Seattle where the children continued to grow and attended school in Ballard. Betty spent 10 years as a school bus driver loving it, especially the children.
Betty's hobbies? Almost anything which included others: family travels, camping, water skiing, seminars, retreats, meetings and she was an avid reader. Betty H. was a friend of Bill W. for 43 years. She had a loving passion for all who struggled with addiction and rejection; always inviting those who would seek a clean and sober life, consistently offering support and acceptance. She felt it was so important to give back for the help she had received by sponsoring, giving service and availability.
She never met a stranger; all were friends. Betty was genuine, witty, funny, kind and compassionate. In 2007 Betty moved to Warm Beach Senior Community. She would always say, "Warm Beach is wonderful and I couldn't be living in a better place. I've had a wonderful life." She loved all the staff and residents and spoke of her love for them often. Betty had a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ for many years and knew that the hope He gave her is Heaven and eternity in His presence.
Betty is survived by her seven children, Pat Benson of Camano Island, Betty Kahler of Everett, David of Everett, Daniel of Mukilteo, Kitty Lingafelter of Everett, Lorraine Hamilton of Lake Stevens and Larry of Bremerton; 15 grandchildren Shannon, Jody, Allyson, Alicia, Corey, Jacob, Brian, Blair, Taylor, Isaac, Luu-Vu, Luu-Van, Lacey, Patrick and David; nine great grandchildren, Brianna, Casey, Brittany, Brailyn, Elizabeth, Conrad, Henri, Forrest and Indiana; and one great-great grandchild, Maria.
