Hope V. Talen
February 13, 1920 – March 14, 2018
Hope V. Talen, passed away on March 14, 2018. She was 98 years old. After 30 years a widow, she is reunited with her husband Herb and there is no doubt she has a lot to tell him! She has now, for the first time, seen her two sons Joey & Sammy completely healed - without the disabilities that took their young lives. She was always a bit mischievous, always had a great story to tell and could talk her way out of a traffic ticket like no one else! Most importantly, she can now see Jesus face to face. She loved the Lord with every fiber of her being and she wasn't afraid to tell you the minute you walked in the door! She devoted her life to Christ as a teenager, served him as a pastor's wife planting Baptist churches throughout the Northwest, and after her husband died, became a missionary to Hawaii.
Born in Seattle in 1920, she lived all around the NW throughout her childhood. Married at 19, she moved with her husband to New York, Washington DC and finally, Pasco, WA while Herb served in the Navy and they had 5 children. In the 1950’s, feeling called to full time ministry, Herb and Hope attended Baptist Bible Seminary in Endicott New York, together! They returned to the NW and ministered in churches in Tacoma, Bremerton, Walla Walla and Pierce, ID until his passing in 1987.
She lived by the motto, “Don’t just stand there, do something,” so even a taxi ride was an opportunity to “do something” for the Lord and she struck up countless conversations with strangers often leading to new friendships. Adventurous Hope was happiest serving the Lord in foreign lands. She was a missionary in Hawaii, travelled extensively and worked from her apartment to support her beloved missionaries abroad, connecting them with US churches. She is remembered for hosting nutbread and applesauce brunches to raise money to support mission work or having mailer stuffing parties to “get the word out.” Through these endeavors, she helped fund several projects, most prominently, a school in Paraguay that proudly bears her name, Hope Christian School. She served the Lord faithfully, up until her final days, leading Bible study at her nursing home. She was in awe of all the Lord accomplished through her service to Him and is rejoicing with her Savior in Heaven!
She is survived by her sister, Alice G Pokorny of Happy Valley, OR her daughter, Gretchen Stucky of Binghamton, NY, her sons John Talen of Odessa, WA and Tim Talen of Springfield, OR; 12 grandchildren: Debbie, John, Marc, Andy, Elizabeth, Esther, James, Mary, Martha, Sarah, Meredith and Ariel; 33 great-grandchildren and even 13 great-great-grandchildren! Her legacy lives on in her family and the lives touched through her tireless work for the Lord. Please, send remembrances to:
