Iyatunde Akunyun passed away peacefully on May 26th in her sleep due to a brain aneurism. She was born in New York City on September 6th 1950 to Raymond Garrette and Sayde Crawford. During her upbringing with her two sisters Renee and Camile, Tunde would care for her sister Camille who passed away very early in life, age 13 of MS. Tunde’s upbringing included what is termed as a Catholic School Survivor. She went on to Hunter College for her undergraduate degree and then onto Lincoln College for her master’s degree in social work. Upon reflection Tunde’s whole life was centered around helping people.
Tunde then would work in the New York City School district teaching young children. This led her to continue a career working in the Metropolitan Hospital as an administrator. Tunde then expanded her career and life to Seattle. As Tunde so ably say “Going to Gods back door”. She was a counselor at Baily Boushey, then onto case manager for families in need of housing for Solid Ground. She then went on to help at Plymouth Housing in case management of those in need of housing in Belltown. There are many success stories that have gone unrecognized that Tunde helped achieve such as getting one mother to continue her education and graduate with honors. Throughout the years Tunde and her husband traveled the world with their best traveling friends, Carl and Debbie. They would travel to Morocco, Italy, Spain, Portugal and beyond.
Surviving is her two daughters Julie Moore, and Dominique Stevens. Her son, Akinyele passed away at the age of 13. Grandchildren include Sekani, Khalil, and Tory and Omar. Great grandchild is Tabia, Renee her sister and her loving husband Wayne.
In lieu of flowers or cards please donate to one of Tunde’s favorite things to do, which was volunteering at the Family Works Food Bank in Wallingford.
