Beloved husband, father, and friend, David passed away unexpectedly on March 4, 2016. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Edward and Mary. Survived by his wife, Laurie, sisters, Margaret Garrison (husband Marvin) and Joey Zimmerman (husband Jim) and two sons Brian and Steven Kidd.
David was born in Seattle on January 13, 1951 and he grew up in West Seattle where he attended Holy Rosary through eighth grade. David attended St. Martins High School in Lacey Washington. At St. Martins he was known for excelling in and having an affinity for Math and Science and as being a practical joker. David graduated from St. Martins in 1969 and attended Washington State University, before transferring to the University of Washington where he studied Business. While in college, he landed his first banking job as a proofer in the computer lab at Seafirst Bank. After graduating from the University of Washington in 1974 with a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.), Accounting and Finance, David worked in audit for Seafirst Bank.
It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Laurie Smith, and the two were married on September 25, 1976. It was also during his career at Seafirst that both his sons, Brian and Steven, were born. David left Seafirst Bank in 1982 and began working at Pacific First Federal Savings Bank soon after. Some of the positions David held while working at Pacific First included Manager of Budgeting and Cost Accounting and Manager of Retail and Bank Accounting. He also graduated from Pacific Coast Banking School in 1990, which is a program in partnership with the Graduate School of Business at his alma mater, The University of Washington. In 1993, Pacific First Federal merged with Washington Mutual, and David was left looking for another job. He was fortunate to find work right away at The Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle (FHLB of Seattle). David held several positions at the FHLB of Seattle, his most recent being, Director of Business Initiatives and Research. However, it was not all just pie charts and spreadsheets for David at the bank: An avid movie fanatic, David also wrote movie reviews for the bank’s internal weekly newsletter. He was also known as one of the bank’s historians and co-authored a pictorial history book about the FHLB of Seattle. The book was distributed to employees, bank members, and board members before the FHLB of Seattle merged with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, Iowa in 2015. David retired from the bank in June of 2015.
Married for almost 40 years, David and Laurie made their home on Seattle’s Eastside, most recently at a residence in Woodinville, Washington, where they have resided since 1989. After retiring, David and Laurie spent their time traveling to Europe and Hawaii. They also frequently traveled to Seaside, Oregon, where they had a beautiful Condominium at Ambassador by the Sea. David was the Treasurer of the Homeowner’s Association of Ambassador by the Sea, a position he held since 2010. Before his untimely death, David and Laurie planned to travel to Italy and Cancun, Mexico. They both planned to spend the rest of their days traveling all over the world. David also loved cars (especially fast cars) including his 1969 Dodge Charger, which his dad bought while David was in high school. He planned to fully restore his Charger during his retirement.
David touched many lives and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Many will remember him for his intelligence, caring nature, grit, and of course his healthy sense of humor.
