James Peter ('Pete') Mayer, age 64, passed away on January 20, 2025. Around a year and a half before he died, Pete made changes in his life and was then able to receive needed medical and other care, with the help of his sister, Cathy, and friend Larry. It was a blessing that Pete was then able to live peacefully in his own apartment. He eventually succumbed to 'end-stage emphysema'. Pete is survived by his sister Cathy, nieces Seema, Kristie, and Katie, and nephews Joe and Jay. Sadly, Pete's sister Judy predeceased him by 2 months. All of this has been so devastating.
Pete was raised on Beacon Hill, with a yard backed by forest and field. As the only son and youngest of three children, he was greatly loved. Pete's childhood was full of adventure! He was very active, whether exploring on many camping trips with family, or at home skinning his knee (OR getting hurt, and to the ER several times!) The neighbor kids were close, playing marbles, baseball, bike riding, and 'Kick the Can'. One of many charms Pete had as a boy was manners, holding doors open exclaiming 'Ladies First!' when he was barely big enough to do so.
Pete never married or had children, but he stayed close to his parents and siblings for much of his life. He loved cats, owned several over his lifetime, and took care of many strays. Although a few times Pete lived in other places, he mostly stayed in the area of his hometown. As a young man Pete loved to camp and backpack with friend/neighbor Steve Delizo, Corey Ward, and others. Some of his favorite places to visit were Moses Lake, and Bullhead City in Nevada. He loved to party and listen to classic 'Rock and Roll'. At one time Pete dabbled in acting (playing an 'Extra' in Northern Exposure, etc.), and he thought of being a Stuntman (he had no fear)!
During his professional career Pete was a Glazier for several decades, following in his father Melvin's footsteps. Pete was like his father in other ways too, as both of them often chose to help others in need. Pete did many glass jobs for friends and family, free gratis. He was raised in a family that taught him to 'treat others the way you want to be treated', and he was very respectful of the elderly. At one time he helped take care of our parents. He also helped long-time next-door neighbor Olga, who was elderly and lived alone.
Pete's uniqueness was also due to his humor! He could tell a joke and literally make everyone laugh. He was 'the life of the party'. Pete was fun, giving, and intelligent, which were traits also inherited from his mother Gladys, with whom he was especially close. No matter where Pete was at, he always remembered birthdays and Mother's/Father's Day of his siblings and parent's. Pete enjoyed watching history and nature programs, and old movies. In the last year or so of his life, he tried not to complain about his many health issues. Pete also suffered for years from debilitating arthritis. Even near the end, Pete smiled and joked around. He will be missed greatly.
