Margaret Elinor Crosby Brown was born on July 27, 1923 "at home" in West Seattle. Her parents were Frank Crosby Jr. and Kathleen (Fairchild) Crosby. She had four brothers: Frank, Donnie, Brent, and Freddy. Mom's dad died at age 28 of a heart attach when Margaret was two years old. She was the last one he spoke to: "Quit rolling your head Kitten and go to sleep."
Life was hard for Grandma Kathleen or "Mimi," with three children and ONE on the way. Mimi married again 2 years later to Fred Benham and Freddy was born. He lived until age eight when he was killed in an auto accident.
Mom's growing up years were quite poor, with many times not enough food to eat. Mimi had to work, so Mom became the "house mother," doing all the chores and keeping her brothers in line. If they got out of line, the saying was, "watch out, here comes Maggie with the broom." Hard times and hard work, with lots of love made them closely bonded for life. The hard work paid off with successful careers and fulfilling lives. Margaret "mothered" her brothers even in their adult years. This has been her main roll in life, "Mother Margaret." Since you have been a part of her life, I am SURE she has "mothered you."
At age 17 she married Don Brown, age 24, in 1940 and was happily married for 64 years. Don passed away September 18, 2004. She has bravely gone on living a full life in her precious home with a view, which gave her pleasure every day! She has added so much Support, Joy, and Advice to all her family and friends.
All of her children: Grant, Alan, and Donna; along with Cathy, Grant's wife, and John, Donna's husband, have been blessed, loved, and prayed for daily. She is our greatest cheerleader, confidant, and listening ear. She would do most anything for us and give us anything, except her old 1990 Buick, which she still wishes she could drive!
Mom was a "giving" Nana to Doug, Teresa, Cathleen, Phil, and Josh, plus a couple of neighbor kids too, Sam and Charlotte. She is also Nana to Shayne, Amy, and Andy. She is Great Nana to Stevin, Dillon, Bailey, Isaac, Micah, Levi, and Jesse. And she is Auntie Margaret to all the cousins.
Mom is Mrs. "B" to all of Grant's ball players and wives, along with old neighborhood friends. She had 12 to 16 kids in our yard or playing games in our house all summer long, when we were teenagers. Mom ran a tight ship... no bad language or fighting. She always let you know when you needed a hair cut and she still does! The words "ain't" and "pee" were banned... you must use "isn't" and "urinate." She still corrects the doctors!
Mom was very close to her sister-in-laws, Lois, Mary Jean, and Jean. She also has two precious life long friends... still living! She met them at West Seattle High School: Tina Mebust and Lonnie Benham.
Mom was a girl scout, a den mother, PTA room mother, and belonged to Ryther for 60 years; a support group for the Ryther Child Center for at risk children, and she worked on the election board. One other accomplishment: She caught a 47 pound king salmon in Canada where she and Dad fished for 15 years. She was very proud of that!
Mom has contributed to so many lives, both young and old, she will be greatly missed. As good and loving as Mom has been to all she has known; she knew she was not perfect and she needed a Savior, ie. Jesus... So at age 8 she gave her heart to Jesus at Tibbots Methodist Church, and later in life as an adult she recommitted her life.
These are the scriptures Margaret knew in her heart are true, and gave her assurance that her soul (personhood) will meet her Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven.
Romans 3:23 All have sinned and fall short of God's glorious standards.
Romas 6:23 The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 14:6 Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Me.
John 11:25-26 Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in Me will live even after dying. Everyone who lives and believes in Me their soul shall never die. Do you believe this?"
Mom invites you also to know your destiny by claiming these scriptures for yourself by a simple prayer. Ask God to forgive your sins and accept His sacrifice on the cross and invite him into your life as Savior, Lord, and friend. She hopes to see you in heaven too!
Each day she lived by the scripture Psalm 118:24. This is the day the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
In loving memory of Margaret.
