Ovidia Elenore Harting

Ovidia Harting, 87, passed away January, 24, 2018, in Seattle, WA. Ovidia was born to John and Amanda Erickson in Fairdale, North Dakota on October 12, 1930. In her early years, she lived on several farms and had a pig named “Bertha”. Winters could be brutal. One farmhand got lost in a blizzard and perished.

In her teen years, she worked as a waitress in Seattle at the “Little Bit of Sweden Café” and also worked as a motion picture film inspector for Columbia Pictures. Following her marriage to Darrell R. Harting, she worked in the family business, “Harting’s Housing” and was a Notary Public. She was also the secretary for the Mineral Center Mining Company who had a mine above Index, WA.

She enjoyed reading, listening to big band music, and watching Mt. Rainier from her living room window. The family enjoyed huge Thanksgiving meals eating two of the biggest turkeys she could find in Seattle. She baked fruitcakes for everyone at Christmas and hinted for See’s candy on Valentine’s Day. She and Darrell packed the children into an army surplus 6X6 and took many prospecting trips to California and Nevada. She had a mineral claim named after her—the “Ovidia Claim” in Nevada. She liked to travel with her family and especially enjoyed trips to Europe and Hawaii. She hated to shop!

Ovidia was a devoted caregiver for her husband Darrell later in his life. She was also devoted to helping her children and grandchildren when they needed it. Ovidia is survived by her five children: Gary (Myrna) Harting, Linda (Hugh) Whitson, Eric (Bobbi) Harting, Roy (Robin) Harting, and Karl Harting. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. “UFF DA”, Mom!

There will be a Celebration of Life for Ovidia Harting at the Normandy Park Cove Building Recreational Center located at 1500 SW Shorebrook, Dr., Normandy Park, WA. It will be open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on March 4, 2018, but the program will not start until 11:00AM. Lunch will be determined later. Please Eric Harting to RSVP. Email: [email protected]
