Lifelong West Seattle resident, Randy Miller passed away peacefully on October 14th surrounded by his family and close friends. Randy was born on May 28, 1946 to Roy and Violet Miller. He was the youngest of their three children. He attended Holy Rosary Grade School and graduated from West Seattle High school where he received athletic recognition in three sports, football, baseball and track (shot put). Through the years, he remained active in sports both as a pitcher for numerous fast pitch teams and a coach for youth baseball, basketball and football.
Randy loved most sports; i.e. Seahawks, Mariners Sonics, as well as fishing and swimming, but he was passionate about Husky football. He would talk to you about them any time of the year but, on those Saturdays during the fall, you would find him glued to the TV or radio cheering them on. In later years he had included the Husky basketball team and women’s softball team but it was the football team that he was devoted to.
He was a hard worker and loyal employee. He started working for Fisher Flour Mills in their warehouse in 1965 and remained there until its sale in 2001. He was a proud member of ILWU Local 9 and served as shop steward several times through the years.
But Randy’s true joy in life was his family. He married Carolyn (Zimprich) in May of 1968 and they have two children, Gayle and Bryan. His three grandchildren Tyler and Abigail Raschkow and Brianne Miller, have added to his joy and happiness in later years.
Randy loved nothing more than to plan family gatherings be it Thanksgiving dinner or the Miller family barbecue. His anticipation and planning would start months before and would continue unabated to the actual event. But nothing could compare to Christmas. Randy loved everything about Christmas and made it special to everyone around him. While every day with Tyler, Abby and Brianne was special, nothing could compare with Christmas at Grandpa Miller’s.
Randy was a generous and giving person. He never worried about himself but delighted in bringing a smile to the faces of others. He was a gentle giant with a heart of gold. While later years had limited his ability to get around, he was always willing to help anyone in any way he could. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Randy is survived by his wife, Carolyn, children, Gayle Raschkow (Keith) and Bryan Miller (Ann), and grandchildren, Brianne Miller, Tyler Raschkow and Abigail Raschkow, sister, Florence Stevenson (Ron), and brother, Rod Miller (Norma), and numerous nieces and nephews.
