Richard was born in Newark, New Jersey December 22, 1942, to Dr. Maxwell H. Shack and Charlotte Flusser Shack. The family moved to Southern California in 1949 in hopes that the climate would benefit Richard’s asthma. His Father, A Physician, became a staff Psychiatrist and Program Director at Patton Hospital in San Bernardino, California. Richard spent his childhood on the grounds of Patton Hospital and described it as an idyllic place for a young boy to grow up.
Richard attended Pacific High School, graduating in 1960. He went on to San Bernardino Valley College and to the University of Southern California. After a brief career as a Social Worker, he entered California Western School of Law during which time he met the love of his life, Gail. They dated for several years and eloped to Las Vegas in 1974.
Richard was awarded his Juris Doctorate in 1975 and commenced a successful Family Law practice in Orange County, California. He was a member of the Orange County Bar Association and served as President of the 500 member Family Law Section in 1987. He was frequently nominated as one of the Best Lawyers in America.
Richard and Gail had four children Torri, Ashley, Shanel and Brandon. They resided principally in Coto De Caza, and later in Tustin Ranch, California.
After 45 years of a successful law practice, Richard retired in 2018 due in large part to health issues. He spent his remaining years with his Gail until her passing in 2020 and then joined his two Daughters Shanel and Ashley in Seattle.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, H. Michael Shack, O.D. and his loving wife, Gail. He is survived by his children – Torri, Ashley, Shanel and Brandon. His Son-in-law Corey, his Nephew Maxwell and his two Best Friends Bob G. and Gerry P.
