Born to Robert Hagist and Tekla Aagaard in 1936, Roberta lived most of her life in the Laurelhurst neighborhood. She was a Roosevelt High and UW grad. She made friends easily and truly enjoyed being part of a community. There were Pi Beta Phi (Pi Phi’s) poker nights, Husky football games, and bridge groups. Roosevelt High was the spawning ground for many of these life-long friendships. Roberta found a connection with most people she met.
Roberta enjoyed collecting Asian antiques, spending many weekends looking for treasures at estate sales. She had impeccable taste – just ask anyone who knew her. Ever the gracious hostess, Christmas Eve dinners were particularly fancy and fun.
Roberta worked at Children’s Hospital for 34 years. She started as a secretary and worked her way up to Director of House Staff Programs, a position where she guided all the residents’ and interns’ lives outside of medical training. Many Seattle doctors did a stint at Children’s, and remember Roberta for both her high expectations and the arrangements she made to make their lives better. Roberta had grit times two, was smart, practical, and succeeded in a male-dominated world.
Roberta’s favorite way to relax was to find sun and a beach. Sunlight Beach on Whidbey Island was one of her favorites. With a beach chair and a good book, she would be happy for hours.
Shortly after graduating from UW, Roberta married Gary Flohr. Their daughter Leslie Flohr (Scott Reid, son Clayton Reid) was born a few years later. Roberta divorced in 1965 and thereafter provided for herself and her daughter. Roberta married Myron Huckle in 1986, a junior high school classmate. They loved to travel together, read books, and entertain. Myron’s nickname was “Big Boy” (6’6”) and Roberta’s was “Mouse” or “Whirling Dervish” or sometimes “The Little General.” They made a great pair, complementing each other in many ways. Sadly, Myron passed away in 2006.
The family sends deep gratitude to Evergreen (Park) Adult Family Home and the assisted-living staff at Ida Culver Broadview. A celebration of Roberta’s life is planned for January.
