Romeo Binobo Burgos passed away peacefully in his sleep at Northwest Hospital on January 24, 2026 in Seattle, Washington at the age of 89. Born to David Burgos and Florentina Binobo on August 28, 1936 in Bacolod, Negros Occidental in the Philippines, he was the second child and first son of nine children. Bacolod City was where he grew up and went to school. After “Roming” graduated from high school, he finished two years of college at the University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos. Unable to finish a degree, he went to work for a shipping line, Negros Navigation Company. He married Phebe Tanamal Tacusalme. They were wed by a justice of the peace on May 4, 1969.
A visa to immigrate to the United States was issued to both of them, and he joined his wife in Seattle, Washington in February 1970. Here they lived, enjoying fishing and camping, traveling, rearing four dogs, and spending time with family and friends. No children were born from that marriage, but they were surrounded and loved by countless nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Roming began working at the University of Washington in 1978 where his wife also worked, until he retired in 2003. He was a handyman, dedicated to improving and beautifying his home and garden. Roming was a serious, hardworking, resourceful man who was committed to fulfilling his duty at work and at home.
In his old age, God was at work in the heart of Roming. At the age of 87, he began Bible studies with Pastor Gonzales of the Filipino-American Adventist Church in Seattle. He carried enthusiasm in his heart as his relationship with God renewed, and he was baptized in June 2024, joining his wife’s faith. He desired to remain active as he aged, going fishing when possible, walking the dog, eating out, and frequently checking the mail. His dementia affected his quality of life, but who he was in his heart still shone through until his last breath: jolly, eager, curious, and resilient.
Roming is survived by his wife Phebe, his three sisters -- Leticia, Editha, and Florentina, a host of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, and his dog Lady. May our beloved Roming rest in peace and rise in glory.
