In memory of LTC Ronald Hannes Thornquist, a devoted army officer, skilled military helicopter pilot, an avid sports fan of his alma mater the University of Washington, and an engaged and loving father.
Ron, nicknamed Moonie, served his country honorably, displaying exceptional bravery and commitment throughout his military career. He served two combat tours in Viet Nam commanding men and flying Huey gunships. Stationed with his family throughout the United States during his 20 plus years of service, his final assignment was leading the Army ROTC program at the University of Washington.
The son of a Swedish immigrant Ron held dear his Swedish heritage. He exemplified the values of his ancestry, embracing a rich cultural heritage that influenced his life. His love for family and the spirit of togetherness mirrored the warmth and camaraderie synonymous with Swedish culture.
Ron's passion for sports and particularly those of his beloved alma mater the University of Washington played central in his life. He bled Husky Purple and held season tickets to both UW Football and UW Basketball for over 40 years. Games were family events and that will continue in his honor and in his absence. When the military took him out of Washington State, you'd find him huddled by a radio trying to catch a Husky game. He was also a competitive athlete by nature. Golf was the favorite and when Seattle rain gave way to dryer days Ron could often be found golfing with friends and family.
He loved the vibrant city of his birth Seattle and more than anything, he loved his family. He was smart, strategic, charitable, funny, and fair by nature. Touched by sentimental movies or the lyrics of a good rock and roll song, it was not unusual to find him moved to tears by something he had seen or heard. He is survived by his two remaining children Julie Altwies (John) and David Thornquist (Diane), and six grandchildren. He lost a daughter, Monica Burdick Coyne, in 2017.
In Swedish they say "tack for allt" meaning thank you for everything. Thank you for everything Dad. We love you and will never forget you. May his memory and legacy endure and bring comfort to those who knew and loved him.
