On Friday, October 23, 2020 our dear friend and loved one, Tom Loftus, passed away at home just days before his 90th birthday. Tom was a man of great stature – fair and just – with the gift of maintaining long and steady friendship with people of all ages. He had a generous nature, a large intellect, a sentimental heart, and a hearty laugh. To all who knew him, he was an encourager.
Thomas Daniel Loftus was born Nov. 8, 1930 in Seattle, the only child to Glendon and Martha (Wall) Loftus. He spent his early years moving about the country, returning to the Pacific North West for his senior year at Port Angeles High School. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Juris from the University of Washington. Admitted to the Washington State Bar in 1958, Tom had a long career as an attorney in both corporate and military law.
Following law school, Tom joined the army and served in Korea just after the armistice signing. He would ultimately finish his military career as a colonel of the reserves, receiving a US Army Commendation Medal and a Meritorious Service Medal in 1985. From 1954 through 1985, Tom was a part of the Army's Judge Advocate General or JAG department located in Fort Lawton.
Tom was legal counsel for Unigard Insurance (Northwest) for 31 years, a US military judge, and worked with arbitration forums including: Seattle Municipal Court, Wash. State Commission on Judicial Conduct, and Wash. State House of Representatives. He was a secretary and trustee of the King County Bar Association.
Tom was a life long member of University Presbyterian Church, always sitting in the same pew where his clear baritone rang out with enthusiasm during the singing of hymns. His years at the church dated back to his college days.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents and his fiancée, Bobbi McCallum. He is survived by his god daughter Tiffany Ibbotson, and the many friends, colleagues and care givers who have treasured him these many years.
A private burial will be held at Acacia Memorial Park. A service at University Presbyterian Church celebrating his life is planned and will be announced at a later date as restrictions for gatherings are lifted.
