Born on December 8, 1930 in the town of South Fork, Pennsylvania, William (best known as Bill) was the last surviving son and 12th child of the late Michael James Chokran and Barbara Chokran née Pechard. Bill grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania where he developed a deep love of agriculture, science, and animals. He attended Adams Township High School and then served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. After proud service to his country, Bill attended college at University of Pittsburgh where received his Bachelor and Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Later he received a second master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University.
Bill’s professional career was spent primarily in aluminum and chemical processing, which led to a life full of adventure and frequent relocation for his family who settled in places as far flung as Jamaica, California, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland and Ohio. He was gregarious, always ready to share a smile, a good joke, and good food. He was remarkably adept in the kitchen and loved to share a meal with anyone who would take the time to share a story. Bill was a generous and loving father until his last breath.
