It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Alfred "Al" Berkery, 92, of Wayne, NJ, on March 12, 2026. Born on April 19, 1933 to Lucia Berkery (Harjes) and Alfred Berkery, Sr. of Guttenberg, NJ, Al later moved to North Bergen, and then to Cliffside Park before moving to Wayne in 2020.
Al was hard-working and dedicated. He was proud to have served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He spent 40 years working as a sheet-metal worker for Local 25, where he was known for his many contributions to large NJ construction projects, such as Willowbrook Mall, Paramus Park Mall, many local schools, stores and restaurants. Despite his many responsibilities, he always made time for his family, several cruises in the Caribbean, vacationing at the Jersey Shore, and in the Poconos.
Al was an avid reader, often reading 2 or 3 novels per week. He also was known for his proficiency at crossword puzzles, which were a daily activity. In addition to those hobbies, he enjoyed baseball, originally following the Brooklyn Dodgers, and more recently, as a devoted NY Mets fan.
Al was preceded in death by his mother Lucia, father Alfred, Sr., brother, Ronald and many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. He is survived by his loving daughter Jean Wambach, son-in-law Bill Wambach, cherished grandaughter Kathryn Wambach and her fiance' Joshua Jongsma.
There will be no formal service held, at Al's request. For those desiring, please consider donations to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
