

Arthur Wichert, 87, of Union City, NJ, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at his home. Born in Union City on December 1st, 1938, to the late Harry and Elsie Wichert, Artie was a kind and loving man who dedicated his life to his family and contributed decades of public service to his hometown.
Artie was a social studies teacher for over 45 years in the Union City school system, where he retired in 2006 as a member of the teaching staff at Union Hill High School. Artie also served as the Public Safety Commissioner and later Mayor of Union City. He showed immense generosity and took great pride and joy in being able to serve others.
Artie considered his greatest accomplishment to be his family. He adored Connie, his wife of 62 years, and the rest of their family. They shared countless special moments together, including attending Yankees and Giants games, taking trips to Cape May, going on strolls in New York City, and making Sunday dinners at home.
He would regularly say to his family members, “you have made my life better.”
Survivors include his devoted wife, Connie, loving children, Sandra and her spouse, Scott, Laurel and her spouse, Tom, Bill and his spouse Marjorie, six wonderful grandchildren, Jessica, Alan, Tommy, Ryan, Sam and Ben.
Artie’s Life Celebration will include visitation on Friday, May 1st, from 3PM to 8PM at the Leber Funeral Home, 1245 Paterson Plank Road, Secaucus, NJ. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, May 2nd, beginning at 11:15AM at SS. Joseph and Michael Church, 1314 Central Avenue, Union City, NJ. Friends and family may begin gathering at 10AM Saturday morning before services at the funeral home. Artie will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery, 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington, NJ following the funeral service.
