

Gladys Madariaga Barcena, 94, of Union City, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025. Born in Matanzas, Cuba, to Ana Maria and Fidel Madariaga, Gladys built a life rooted in love, family, and tradition. She came to the United States with her family in February 1970, where she continued to nurture the values of love and perseverance that defined her life.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Basilio Barcena. Together they raised two daughters, Deborah Barcena and Beatriz Chesnov (Jody), who carry forward her legacy of devotion to family. She was the cherished grandmother of Alnie Sanatar (David) and Jillian Chesnov, and a proud great-grandmother to Luca Sanatar. Gladys was a beloved sister to Fidel, Leonel, Dayse, Raquel, and Ana Maria, and she is reunited in eternal rest with her late siblings Orlando and Jose Maria.
A devoted mother and wife, Gladys was also known as an extraordinary cook, a passionate gardener, and someone who treasured time with her family. She especially took pride in hosting holidays and family gatherings, bringing joy and togetherness to all who attended. She found joy in traveling and sharing life’s simple but meaningful moments with loved ones.
A visitation for Gladys will be held Monday, September 29, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Leber Funeral Home, 1245 Paterson Plank Road, Secaucus, NJ 07094. A funeral mass will occur Tuesday, September 30, 2025 from 10:45 AM to 11:30 AM at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 1219 Paterson Plank Rd, Secaucus, NJ 07094. A committal service will occur Tuesday, September 30, 2025 from 12:30 PM to 12:45 PM at George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Rd, Paramus, NJ 07652.
Gladys will be remembered for her warmth, her generosity, and the deep love she gave so freely. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
