He was born and raised in Jersey City to father, Christopher Smith, and mother, Estelle Smith. Joe attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School in Jersey City and would go on to work many years for Hudson Refrigeration (Jersey City), worked at Marschall Warehousing (Teteboro), and became a Park Attendant for the Hudson County Parks before eventually retiring. He has been a Secaucus resident since 2015.
Joe was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas, Jack, Frank, and Christopher, as well as his sisters, Grace, Muriel, and Ann. He is survived by brothers, Robert and James, as well as sisters, Stella and Janice. Joe is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Husband of Susan (Stone) Smith. Father of Marc J. Smith and Shawn J. Smith. Grandfather to his beloved grandchildren, Aidan and Kayla Smith.
Joe was an avid aficionado of classic cars. He was a fixture in the neighborhood driving or working on his loved 1964 Chevy Impala. He also could be heard revving his previously owned 1973 Dodge Charger. He would look forward to any car shows in the area, especially if he could meet up with any of his friends. Along with his cars, Joe loved his oldies and Doo-Wop Music, especially the Duprees, whom he was friends with growing up in Jersey City.
Joe was always a generous soul that would help anybody. He would give you the shirt off his back even if he didn’t have another one to wear. He made friends with people wherever he went and made lasting impressions on people. As big as his heart was also was his sense of humor. He would always make people smile with a joke. He was always sincerely happy for other people if something good happened for them.
Joe was an old school Jersey City guy. He continued to attend events in Jersey City and pop in to the local bars to see who was around to talk. He could also be seen bopping all around Secaucus with his trademark platinum blonde/silver hair, coffee in hand, talking to somebody, whether at Natoli’s, playing lottery numbers at the Shell Station, The Gro Mart, town events, or just hanging out with his car hood up. The second somebody would need help with something or a laugh, he would be right there to provide both to them.
Not many gatherings or events would end without hearing Joey announcing, “You don’t gotta go home, but you can’t stay here.” Joe was a beloved family member and a dear friend to all that met him. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
A visitation for Joseph will be held at Mack Memorial Home, 1245 Paterson Plank Road, Secaucus, NJ, on Wednesday, October 28, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St Nicholas RC Church, 122 Ferry Street, Jersey City, NJ, on Thursday, October 29, at 10:30 am.
