I lived at 513 30th Street in Union City literally around the corner from the bakery. We used to go around at night before they closed and for  a dollar  or 2, you can get dozen buns. Just say do you have any Staley's LOL. Joe didn't want to throw anything away so he would sell it to you cheap. Joe even through extra stuff in the bag because he didn't like waste. Joe's always was a kind and sometimes quiet man who can make the best cakes I've ever tasted. I've tried different bakeries over the years and some came close but they'll never be another Bakery like spiekermans. I was born in 1957 so I spent a lot of time going to that bakery throughout most of my life. I later became a moving man at Frank Richter moving and storage. We moved Joe's Bakery from Union City to Lyndhurst where he purchased Mazurs bakery. I didn't mind the drive because I always picked up a couple extra crumb buns to eat on the way home. They knew I had them because I had white powdered sugar on my clothes. One day I was talking to Joe and he mentioned the old place I said I still have my Spiekermans club discount card. He said I love to see that so I dug it from the back of my wallet. He said his wife would get a kick out of that I said give it to her. It was old faded and the pointed Edge is wore off but it was a spikerman's Club card the last of its kind. I said give it to your wife. Ever since then when I came in the store he would automatically give me a free coffee. Joe had good coffee it was always fresh. But my favorites were the Boston cream donuts thick chocolate on top. Amazing cream inside, there was so much cream when you bit into it, it ran down your hand if you weren't careful. He had regular crumb buns and crumb cakes and jumbo crumb cakes I love them all. Cheese Danish covered with icing and a big puddle of cheese in the center. They don't get or taste any better. I miss Joe's jokes and the bakery so bad.

I am very sad to hear that Joe passed I just found out today.I worked for Conolly,Calhoun,Conolly now known as Bakemark I was his supply delivery driver for many years.He was my favorite customer ,he was a very pleasant,kind, honest man ,his family ,and employees always treated me good when I made my deliveries It was an honor to have known him and he will be greatly missed.

To Jackie and Family,I don't know if you remember me, but when your father owned the bakery on Bergenline Ave in Union City he would support my walk for Juvenile Diabetes.  He continued to support my fundraising every year, including his time owning Mazur's.  I recall speaking with Jackie many times.  Nobody baked like your dad.  We would always buy the Swiss bread and doughnuts.  Best ever.  He was such a kind man and always had time for a few words with a little girl like me.  My father grew up in Weehawken and as a young boy the family would always get their baked goods from Spiekermann's.  I only just heard of his passing.I and my family want to extend our condolences to all who loved him.  He was always well respected in our community.  My late music teacher, Frank Segedin, was hired by Joseph to play his accordion during the holidays.  Frank was like a grandfather to me and the job at the bakery meant a lot to him.  You should know his widow sends her love and prayers.

The Spiekermann family gave me my first job at Mazurs Bakery. It was a joy working for the family with Joe always so passionate about his business. He worked tirelessly, always being sure his employees were taken care of. He always kept us laughing. My sincere condolences go out to Roseanne, his beloved daughters and extended family. He loved his work but it was clear his pride was his family. He will surely be missed.

Heartbroken to hear of Joe's passing.  We went thru grammer and high school together and we were so lucky to be able to share our memories and a good time at our 50 th high school reunion. .God took another great man home...my deepest condolences Roseanne and family..he will always be in my prayers ...
